South Island ▷ Mount Cook - MacKenzie ▷ Lake Tekapo ▷
Up there with one of the best sites I’ve stayed in 3 months travelling round NZ.
Firstly $30pp per night for a powered site in a tourist location like this is great, soo nice to have a solo rate, thanks.
You can walk anywhere and everywhere, to the lake, into the village, to the church.
Bathrooms are spotless and showers were hot and spacious.
Lots of ducks and birds around the site too.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Darfield ▷
It’s a nice quiet spot away from the road.
You have to book online and get an entry code otherwise you can’t get past the barrier.
$25pn for powered site for solo traveller and there’s nothing else around for food or anything.
It’s basically just a field sectioned off into sites.
The bathrooms were ok although a few of the showers and toilets were closed for winter.
Decent enough place to stop if you need one as there’s nothing else around much else around. No WIFI though.
South Island ▷ Mount Cook - MacKenzie ▷ Mount Cook ▷
Amazing location, only 20 mins drive on the most spectacular road down to Mt Cook village.
Only $35pp for a powered site in a location like this I’ll take.
You get a choice of site which is good as a lot aren’t level but the night skies are awesome.
Wifi was good. Only negative was there was only 2 toilets and 4 showers in the bathroom which wasn’t enough for the amount of people staying there. Queues in the morning for the bathroom isn’t great.
But other than that it’s a good site and much cheaper than staying in the village with better weather!
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Geraldine ▷
Excellent park run by such lovely people.
Everything is so neat and tidy around the park and extremely clean.
$35pp for powered site for solo traveller is a little on the steep side but standard Top10.
Close walk to the town and eateries.
Free WIFI was excellent.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Greymouth ▷
Nice place.
Unfortunately I was there on the rainiest of days and so basically parked up and survived the day inside the van!
$35pp for solo traveller in small van is a little steep but standard for Top10.
The bathrooms are very clean and the showers are hot and spacious with changing room which is good.
Free WIFI which helped immensely!
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Ashburton ▷
I needed somewhere to stay for a night inbetween Tekapo and Akaroa and so stopped by here.
$37pn for a solo person with a small van for a powered site is pretty steep, up there with the most I’ve paid in 3 months of travelling NZ!
The sites themselves are nicely sheltered by bushes either side. But the general facilities just feel a little old and uncared for. The bathroom sinks were full of dust and dirt that had come through the vents! The shower floor was a little the same although the water pressure and temp was good.
Just feels overpriced for what it is.
South Island ▷ Nelson Region ▷ Murchison ▷
Had a powered site for 1 night, only $25pp.
Lovely friendly lady on checkin.
Had the choice of powered sites, only a couple of caravans there bar me.
It’s right by the beautiful river, the sunset was beautiful.
Kitchen was spacious and had all the pots and pans you need.
Bathroom is just a portaloo currently whilst they expand.
Free wifi which worked well.
Really lovely setting and peaceful nights sleep!
South Island ▷ Wanaka Region ▷ Wanaka Township ▷
Stayed on a powered site for 4 days.
Really nice park, walking distance to the lake and to town. Friendly helpful staff.
Bathrooms are warm and clean, showers are hot.
Free unlimited wifi.
And only $24pp in winter.
South Island ▷ Queenstown Region ▷ Queenstown Township ▷
Stayed here on a powered site for a week.
After 8 weeks of travelling around NZ, this has to be up there as one of the best overall campgrounds. Pretty much every van site has lake views, the facility hub is basically like a decent hostel. Bathrooms are spacious, heated and cleaned regularly.
The kitchen is big, just remember you need to bring all your own plates and utensils etc as they don’t provide (understandable as I’m sure people nick stuff)!
Just really nice place and only 400m or so down to the marina and the brewery 🙏
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Balclutha ▷
Nice little site run by a friendly lady.
Close to Nugget Point, only a 10 min drive and the very picturesque coastline.
Also a nice pub in the village.
The site itself was wet and rainy on my overnight stay. $30 for a powered site.
Bathrooms were typical NZ campground, clean but cold.
Free wifi which is always nice.
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Waikawa ▷
All now run as part of the CurioScape site which has the cafe, penguin watching etc aswell.
Amazing spot right on the mighty ocean. It’s a massive site with sites everywhere.
Unfortunately it’s $50 for a powered site even just for 1 person which differs to most sites where they do per person.
Decided to stay though as it is a great spot to watch the amazing waves.
The bathrooms and kitchen looked clean and you need a code to get in.
No penguins unfortunately.
Cafe closed at 3.30pm and only opens in winter at night if multiple people book ahead.
Amazing waves and sunset though and listening to the waves as you fall asleep no more than 50m away is cool.
South Island ▷ Queenstown Region ▷ Kingston ▷
Lovely place near the lake.
Nice separated powered sites for $30.
Possibly one of the best kitchens I’ve seen in 7 weeks of travels. Big, clean, fully stocked, really nice.
There are seperate bathrooms as usual but also a few unisex ones which are great, hot water is good.
Free wifi.
All in all one of the best places I’ve stayed.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Cron street ▷
I stayed on a powered site for a couple of nights.
The camper sites are at the back of the site in the trees which was nice and quiet. There are tables around each site although they are old and dirty.
It’s generally a nice site but some buildings and parts of it are looking a little tired.
There is a free sauna and spa pool which is nice but the pool is cracked and peeling too.
It’s an easy walk into the village and there is a bar at the front of the site but even that there was no one behind the bar when I went in and couldn’t get served!
It’s nice enough place to stay, just needs a bit of an uplift in certain areas.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Hokitika ▷
Stayed on a powered site, only $25pp.
The site was spacious and there were individual bathrooms with toilet and shower which was nice. Shower temp was hot.
Other than a few permanent caravans, I reckon I was the only person booked in which was a bit wierd cos it’s a nice site and half the price of the one in town.
Only a couple of kms drive to town and the beach.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Haast ▷
Nice little site on the road just after the township.
Pretty quiet, nice gravel powered sites. Bathrooms were heated which is nice but only 2 toilets and showers!
Nice surrounding views. Just loses a mark for being $40 for solo traveller with small van, expensive in comparison to most other places.
South Island ▷ Coastal Otago ▷ Oamaru ▷
What a great find.
A couple of km off the main road down by the beach road.
Grant who runs it is a lovely fella.
Looks like he’s done this place up, now a few powered sites, the lodge and some beautiful hot tubs.
There is 1 bathroom for campers with a toilet and shower cubicle. It’s clean, it’s warm, it’s a nice way to start the day!
The place was soo lovely and quiet, the beach is a beauty, sea mist galore.
$30 for a powered site.
Highly recommended.
North Island ▷ Coromandel ▷ Tairua ▷
Great little place right in town but very quiet.
The owner Charlie is a top bloke and very helpful. I was feeling under the weather so just wanted somewhere to put my head down for a few days and recover and this place was great. $25pn for powered site, an extra $2 for a hot shower.
Bathrooms are decent, there’s a kitchen, a laundry and a games room if you want it.
Literally 1min walk into the small Tairua township where’s there’s a supermarket and a few good places to eat.
Recommend.
North Island ▷ Northland ▷ Kaitaia ▷
Nice little site run by a lovely guy.
Stayed here for 1 night after driving back from Cape Reinga.
$25 for powered site.
Hot showers and good clean toilets.
1gb of free wifi.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Methven ▷
Lovely little site off the main road but only a 2 min drive to the pubs and restaurants.
Nice guy who runs it, you can see he cares.
Kitchen is a bit old but feels warm which is nice.
Bathrooms are standard fare but nice and clean.
Wifi unfortunately doesn’t reach the powered sites but the Irish bar in town solved that!
Would recommend.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Hanmer Springs ▷
Lovely old kiwi campground just outside of town.
Nice people, lovely and quiet and only $22.50 for a powered site (compared to $50-60 in town!)
Old but clean bathrooms.
The whole place has a nice safe feel to it.
South Island ▷ Kaikoura Region ▷ Kaikoura ▷
Awesome spacious site, basically in a seperate zone in the pub car park.
But it’s surrounded by mountains, each powered space is big enough to spread yourself out.
Murphy’s on tap in the pub too, good food and a nice atmosphere. Maybe a few too many kids on a Saturday night for me but can’t win em all eh!
North Island ▷ Manawatu - Wanganui ▷ Palmerston North ▷
Great little place about 7km off the main highway.
Nice and quiet
Stayed for 1 night on my way down to get the ferry. Met with Judy who was super lovely and friendly, she showed me around and I had the choice where to park up. $30 for a powered site.
Bathroom and kitchen were very clean and the whole place had a lovely vibe, even though not many people around.
And FREE unlimited WIFI (other campgrounds pls take note!) 🙌
The Cossie Club is 200m away for food and drinks if you need.
South Island ▷ Coastal Otago ▷ Portobello ▷
It’s an ok place.
The drive down there on the peninsula road is stunning.
The site itself is typical older NZ site. Only $24 for a powered site which was good.
Bathroom was clean but cold.
Maybe I got unlucky as it was wet and rainy but in general there’s not a lot in Portobello, the pub was empty, the cafe closed and 1 general store. Felt a bit bleak.
North Island ▷ Taranaki ▷ New Plymouth ▷
Really nice site sitting above the ocean with great views.
$34pn for a spot a little further back but still only a 20m walk to the view.
Clean bathrooms, shower water was a little temperamental but when it got hot it got really hot!
The site is nicely tucked away and quiet. Lot of ducks as visitors to the van.
My only gripe would be the 1gb limit per day wifi. With how much people need and use wifi nowadays honestly 1gb is literally about 15 mins of a tv show streaming! Frustrating!
North Island ▷ Northland ▷ Dargaville ▷
Stayed here on my drive back from up north, as it was getting dark.
Bit suprised it was $35pp pn for a powered site at this time of year and seeing I was the only van staying outside of the cabins they had.
Clean but cold and drafty bathrooms. Clean and spacious kitchen. Very small dump site.
Free Wifi but kept dropping in and out
Decent and quiet enough site for 1 night but just a bit overpriced for what it is.
North Island ▷ Northland ▷ Paihia ▷
Nice site, great location.
Lovely lady on reception gave me a powered spot right near the water, beautiful spot to watch the sun go down.
Only 1 of the facilities blocks were open so only a couple of toilets and showers for everyone but seemed to work out ok.
Kitchen and laundry on site too if required.
20 min walk into town and/or Countdown supermarket at the end of the road.
South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷ Picton / Marlborough Sounds ▷
Turned up just as it was getting dark off the ferry.
$30 for powered site. Quite a few residents there it seems but made it feel quite homely.
The facilities are definitely on the retro style but kinda like it.
Bathroom was cold though and couldn’t get any hot shower water.
Nice spot for 1 night though. Free WIFI which was great and doesn’t seem to the norm unfortunately at a lot of sites!
North Island ▷ Northland ▷ Tutukaka ▷
Nice concrete powered pitch which is good after all the rain.
Nice and quiet. Only $20.
Friendly staff for check in. Showers cost but they give you the coins which is nice.
There’s a kitchen and hangout space.
No WIFI though
North Island ▷ Auckland Region ▷ Auckland ▷
Decent place with concrete campervan sites which helps after so much rain.
The girls at reception were very friendly snd helpful.
Bathrooms and kitchen were ok but shoeing thier age a bit, although very clean.
Worst and most annoying bit is the 500mb max WIFI you get given, I mean come on, get with the times, this literally lasted 20 mins. The coverage on site without isn’t great either, can’t believe we still live in times where wifi isn’t free for all at some places!
North Island ▷ Tairāwhiti Gisborne ▷ Tokomaru Bay ▷
It’s a proper old locals pub right on the ocean and they have 2 powered spots in the car park for $25pn.
The pub was packed with locals on a Saturday night watching the rugby and it was a nice atmosphere.
The car park was pretty quiet too even with people leaving the pub etc.
The pub has been up for sale for a while supposedly so who knows what happens in future but I enjoyed my night here.
North Island ▷ Tairāwhiti Gisborne ▷ Te Kaha ▷
This place is closed from May 1st to October 1st.
No mention of that anywhere on here or Google, just a sign on the locked gate. Frustrating after a long drive!!
North Island ▷ Tairāwhiti Gisborne ▷ Wairoa ▷
Looks like a lovely spot.
There were a few campers there when I arrived but the grass was very very wet and muddy so I didn’t take the chance of getting stuck in the van and went down the road to the other one.
North Island ▷ Tairāwhiti Gisborne ▷ Wairoa ▷
Lovely place right on the beach.
Space for about 8-10 vans. I got in about 5pm and took the last space on the front.
Quite a few people come down to walk their dogs on the beach but generally it’s a quiet spot and people were very friendly. Amazing night sky too!
South Island ▷ Kaikoura Region ▷ Kaikoura ▷
Right in the middle of town, there’s about 10 spaces.
I was first in at 5pm but it soon filled up. Great location and suprisingly quiet for where it is. A few really clean public toilets at the end of the car park, along with a few pubs which was great! 😀
North Island ▷ Wairarapa ▷ Greytown ▷
Great place tucked away in the trees, away from the road.
Run by a lovely Vietnamese lady, powered site was $22. Toilets and shower was clean. And although I didn’t use it the kitchen was huge and clean with all amenities. Very peaceful at night.
South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷ Picton / Marlborough Sounds ▷
Top site.
Has everything you’ll ever need. It’s walkable to town if needed.
Only small gripe is the price at $46 for a plug in and even though the site was pretty empty they put everyone right next to each other!
But it’s a safe site and easy 2 min drive to the ferry
North Island ▷ Hawkes Bay ▷ Havelock North ▷
Looks like a new or renovated holiday park.
Lovely spacious sites for each van with a dump site at each plug-in, amazing!
The bathrooms are like a salon. 5 toilets, 5 showers and 5 sinks each with a mirror. Even music playing so you don’t feel lonely in there!
New pub literally on site/next door which is decent too and saves on driving.
And only $30 for a powered site for all this. Amazing. The best so far!
North Island ▷ Tairāwhiti Gisborne ▷ Opotiki ▷
I stayed for a couple of nights whilst not feeling too well and needing some rest.
It’s a decent enough site, you can tell it’s a little on the older side and has a lot of permanent residents living on or around the site.
But it has all the facilities you need and is only a 2 month walk through the site to the beach.
For the amount of residents there it was still very quiet. There is a store just outside the main gates too for essentials or a 10 min drive to Opitiki for supermarkets etc
South Island ▷ Kaikoura Region ▷ Kaikoura ▷
Nice spot by the beach.
I parked in by the fence by the beach but even though it didn’t look too muddy, I had to be pulled out by a lovely guy staying there. He said the owner had warned them not to park there but didn’t put any warnings or bollards up!
Other than that it was very quiet.
The showers are hot but in general the toilets are indoor outdoor and pretty cold.
Kitchen was also indoor outdoor.
