Te Puka Tavern

'Hosting the Coast since 1873'

The Te Puka Tavern is an east coast icon situated 90km from Gisborne along the picturesque SH35, an easy and pleasant drive northeast of the Gisborne city.

Sitting on the water’s edge of the Pacific Ocean, looking over beautiful Tokomaru Bay, it is the ideal place to stop and rest awhile and meet the friendly people of the East Coast. The Te Puka Tavern has provided hospitality to travelers and locals alike since it was established in 1873.

It was rebuilt in 1988 after Cyclone Bola swept the original pub off its foundations. Te Puka Tavern now offers travelers cafe and pub food, accommodation is available in modern units, we also have powered parking for self-contained camper vans and of course a well-stocked and welcoming bar.

The staff is always happy to advise you on things to see and do in the area and take pride in serving our valued guests. Nau mai...Haere Mai!

  • It’s a proper old locals pub right on the ocean and they have 2 powered spots in the car park for $25pn.

The pub was packed with locals on a Saturday night watching the rugby and it was a nice atmosphere.

The car park was pretty quiet too even with people leaving the pub etc.

The pub has been up for sale for a while supposedly so who knows what happens in future but I enjoyed my night here.

  • If you just want to park your van for the night it’s a $5 per person.

Good views of the bay but nothing special otherwise. Nearest campground is by permit only.
