An easy walk from the carpark.
A little difficult to get that mirror image shot as there are so many ducks on the water causing ripples! There are toilets in the carpark, main gift shop/info centre closed but cafe with a few gifts and souvenirs is open.
South Island ▷ Wanaka Region ▷ Wanaka Township ▷
What a camp!
The best on our trip. This little gem is easy to get to despite the sign indicating it’s not suitable for large campers. We drove down easily in a 7m Sprinter. The views across the lake are quintessential NZ vistas. Plenty of room to park and there are toilets on site. Do the right thing and pay your fees on entry or online. Plenty of mobile coverage.
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Waikawa ▷
Don’t be bluffed that Bluff is the southern most point.
Take a walk out to Slope Point. The road out is sealed and the walk commences from the carpark. There are toilets here as well as a memorial to those who have lost their lives in this area. The walk to the Point is easy but it is on private land so please respect that. There are no fences along the cliff edges so stay away and keep children close. Well worth the walk.
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Waikawa ▷
A great short walk at the end of a sealed road takes you to the lighthouse.
Very strong wind here at times so hold onto your hat. Interesting history is told in the nearby shelter, that also houses a toilet. Worth a visit.
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Waikawa ▷
This is a quirky camp ground with heaps of sites on the edge of rugged cliff faces and sandy beach.
If it’s windy then ask for a sheltered spot amongst the flax. Level spots are a bit tricky to find, just point your head uphill. This coast line is spectacular with giant kelp and lots of seals.
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Invercargill ▷
A handy dump and water spot that’s easy to access and has a waste bin.
The fresh water is a push in tap that goes off by itself so best to have someone with you that can keep pushing the tap in until your tank is full. If you’re full and the tap hasn’t gone off then point your hose into the garden u til the flow stops. For a laugh, use the adjacent public toilet that plays music to you as you sit and contemplate!
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Hokitika ▷
A large open campsite not far off the highway.
It’s easy to find a level site. There are all access toilets and shower cubicles. The showers are cold but there is a rope and pulley system for hanging your own shower bladder. There is a shelter with sinks for washing up and water pointsbut the water is non potable. Due to ongoing thefts you cannot pay cash upon arrival. This does not stop you doing the right thing and paying online or via a QR code advertised onsite. Without your contribution these sites won’t exist.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Springfield ▷
A nice quiet campground but there are trains passing by.
Level spots and squeaky clean amenities.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Fox Glacier ▷
Firstly the information on the front page is no longer current.
Heading south from Fox Glacier Village, drive across the river and then turn right. You cannot drive any further. The return walk is about 5k return with a little more if you take the Moraine side track. There are very clear barriers at the end of the walk with warnings about the dangers of going down into the river bed or closer to the glacier. Sadly that didn’t stop a couple of disrespectful people today jumping the barriers with no thought to those whom they would expect to rescue them if need be. The walk is quite easy, no toilets available.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Cron street ▷
What a great find just north of Franz Joseph.
The area is large and all sites easily accessible. The lake is nearby and the walk to its beach is an easy one. There are toilets plus a shelter with sinks. Highly recommend. Do the right thing and book online or pay when you get here. Not a busy place at all in May.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Greymouth ▷
What a great place to park up for the night.
We didn’t need power so chose site #6 in the tent area. We were the only ones here. Stacey who manages this lovely place is extremely welcome and helpful. For once we didn’t have to pay extra for showers and oh my, what a great ablutions block. Each shower is a cubicle with a glass door and a soft fluffy mat is provided for the drying and dressing area. At the back of the park is a private walkway to Totara Falls. Worth the effort. Scattered around the park are glow worm viewing areas but we found the best was down along the right hand side of the exit road. You will find a track into the bush. At the end is a rope to help you down into the creek bed and along the bank the glow worms do their thing. Very pretty. The kitchen/lounge area is very welcoming with a wood fire and a box of donated bits and pieces like sauce and spices for campers to use. I highly recommend a night here.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Timaru ▷
This really is just a dirt carpark but it’s free, close to the beach and has garbage bins.
We arrived to find a camper van bogged on the beach. Unless you are a 4x4 then it’s best to stay in the car park.
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Lumsden ▷
We came upon this quaint little place 9 years ago so we sought it out on this trip and stayed on the same site.
For $40 for 2 we had power and an ensuite with plenty of hot water. There is a small hut onsite where you can use a microwave, kettle and toaster. Payment is at the little building at the gate but the lovely Pam will come around and check that all is well. The park is signposted from the highway. It’s quiet with a beautiful rural outlook. Highly recommend for both powered and unpowered with the latter having access to a shared facility.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Fox Glacier ▷
Make the effort.
Yes the road is 12k of gravel but it is well maintained. Just go slow. We had no trouble in our 7m camper. The views of the sunset over the beach in front and the reflection on Mt Cook behind are stunning. I had full mobile coverage here so do the right thing and book online or pay in cash when you arrive.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Harihari ▷
We stopped here for lunch and a swim.
Of so chilly but refreshing. Picnic tables on grassed area. Very small camping area and as of 21/5/25 the toilets are out of action hence 8/10.
South Island ▷ Fiordland ▷ Te Anau ▷
A great spot to park up about half way between Te Anau and Milford and get ahead of the many who stream into Milford.
This is a large site with plenty of level spots and plenty of toilets. From here you can do the Lake Gunn walk. If you haven’t booked online then do the right thing and pay upon entry.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Cron street ▷
A convenient dump station for black, grey and fresh water.
8/10 given because there is no hose to flush out the cassette but if you’re strong and agile, you can hold it up under the tap. Thanks Franz Josef.
South Island ▷ Queenstown Region ▷ Queenstown Township ▷
Hidden away in central Queenstown and a bit tricky to get to hence 8/10.
But it has all you need - dump, grey water and fresh water. The dump hose will reach your toilet flush tank to top up.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Timaru ▷
A handy dump point on the foreshore but no hose to wash out the cassette.
Easy enough to hold it up to the tap though. This facility is adjacent to toilets and also overnight parking.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Darfield ▷
What a gem of a place to stay for the last night of our holiday before dropping the can back to Christchurch.
Book online, site run by the Selwyn Council and the best bit? Only $15 for the night, unpowered. Showers require $2 coins. There are plenty of spaces and access is via a boom gate with a code that will be given to you when you book. There is a dump station and plenty of water points. Amenities are clean and there is a kitchen for you to use. Highly recommend.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Darfield ▷
Great place to do that final gas bottle fill before heading to Christchurch to return your van.
The very helpful staff can measure your remaining capacity and fill accordingly instead of paying $50 for a swap when you may not need it.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Karamea ▷
What a great find.
Given the season it was very quiet and we jagged a beachside spot even at 5pm. The road from Karamea is sealed all the way now. You can book online or pay when you arrive. Price at this time was $10 per adult. The sunset over this wild sea was magic. Ideal spot from which to start some or all of the Heaphy.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Karamea ▷
A nice little campground tucked behind the pub.
Cabins, powered & non powered sites available. Very friendly host. Cost for unpowered sits is $40 pn for 2 plus $5 to use black water dump. Grey water dump free. Could not locate potable water though and you’ll need to ask for a hose from their non potable tap to fill you toilet flush tank.
South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷ Blenheim ▷
A great spot right on the beach.
There are gravel spots for vans or grass if not too wet. Be sure to check where to park for sun given the mountain behind. Price is $10 per adult. There is coverage here to allow you to do the right thing and book. There is a cold shower in the toilet block. A handy spot for a walk to Monkey Bay or Whites Bay. The drive to Whites Bay is windy but sealed. Beyond here to Picton is dirt and narrow.

Janet at Rankers was extremely helpful in sourcing a rental that met our specific requirements.
Her responses were timely and always answered fully all questions asked. I would strongly recommend future customers let Rankers do the legwork for you.
Hi Susan, legwork keeps us fit and it's the only way to find the best campers. Janet's legwork is legendary too :)

Very friendly staff.
Handy location. Facilities were fine. Kitchen very clean. As it was raining, we appreciated the coveted walkway from our camper to the showers.
North Island ▷ Waikato ▷ Kawhia ▷
A lovely quiet location.
We stayed in May 2017 and had the place to ourselves. Grant our host was a gem. He made us feel very welcome and was a wealth of local knowledge.
North Island ▷ Waikato ▷ Raglan ▷
A very expensive place to stay.
The park is large with many permanent vans (empty for the winter thankfully), so the park would be a very busy place in summer. Great location, walking distance to town via a foot bridge.
North Island ▷ Ruapehu ▷ Taumarunui ▷
A very scenic and enjoyable drive away from the major roads.
A short dirt section of around 12k but nothing to be concerned about. No fuel along the way.
South Island ▷ Kaikoura Region ▷ Kaikoura ▷
Right on the beach.
We paid $15 pp for a powered site. The toilets are basic and no shower here, but access to lovely facilities just along at the next campground are included in the price.
South Island ▷ Nelson Region ▷ Motueka ▷
At $17 pp for a powered site it's a bit expensive, but does include showers.
The facilities are tired but functional and there is a great kitchen with all you could need. The location is only about 100m walk along a track to the Main Street for groceries. The host is very friendly and helpful. Be mindful that you are adjacent to the fire station which uses a community alarm to call in the fire fighters. We had the privilege of hearing it in the small hours, but it is the very essence of community life. There is no dump station here but there is a public one that also supplies fresh water in the Main Street. Use is by donation.
South Island ▷ Nelson Region ▷ Motueka ▷
A great spot right on the water.
At $5 pp it is a bargain. No power or showers. Caretaker is a lovely lady who will come around to collect your fee at night. She lives in a quirky truck on site. The night we were there it poured. We were fine in our van, but ground can become water logged.
North Island ▷ Tairāwhiti Gisborne ▷ Gisborne ▷
We stayed here in May 2017.
We arrived in the dark and was met by a very friendly and helpful host who accommodated us even though most of the park was water logged due to recent heavy rains. We certainly appreciated the spot. However, I would have to agree that the facilities need a revamp and the price is quite high.
South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷ Picton / Marlborough Sounds ▷
The cleanest facilities we have seen.
Shower area heated and no coins needed. Great place to stay if using the ferry. Walking distance to eats. Host very friendly.
North Island ▷ Manawatu - Wanganui ▷ Whanganui ▷
A great find.
This all weather area is adjacent to the beach. A powered site is $6 plus $2 pp and $2 for the shower. There is a washing machine for use for a donation and sinks for washing up. There is a dump station but no water for topping up your water supply. The elderly gentleman who runs the park lives across the road out the back gate. No shops in this area so have all you need with you. Well worth the short drive off the highway.
North Island ▷ Taranaki ▷ Stratford ▷
A lovely secluded place to stay.
We were greeted by chickens and tiny ponies. The guy running it has a quirky sense of humour - check out the "gym". He was on hand should we have needed anything. The facilities were spotless and showers included in the price. A little expensive at $15 pp for a powered site, but given the overnight temp, we were glad to have heating. Would certainly stay here again.
North Island ▷ Auckland Region ▷ Auckland ▷
A small but clean and friendly park.
Good place to tidy up a van before departing NZ. Dump station onsite and a spot in the kitchen to donate left over supplies. Lounge area has a book swap, TV and table tennis. Petrol available nearby. Facilities clean and showers nice and hot.
There is also a place on the way to the motorway that you can top up your gas bottles. thank you for your positive review.

South Island ▷ Mount Cook - MacKenzie ▷ Lake Tekapo ▷
We stayed one night in a powered site and at $46 plus showers we felt it over priced.
It's a busy spot so best to book ahead if you can. Walking distance to hot pools but at $25 for a dip, again, very expensive.
South Island ▷ Wanaka Region ▷ Makarora ▷
Our stay at this spot was marred only by a group who obviously didn't know what "no fires" meant.
The spot itself is beautiful with great views across the lake and clear water for those brave enough to dip their toes. The foreshore is littered with washed up wood that has been assembled by creative folk into shelters and sculptures. A great site to see. There are toilets at this site but according to signs, no suitable drinking water. The available camping space is quite extensive, so take a walk in all directions before settling down.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Hokitika ▷
Whilst this spot can get busy there is plenty of space.
There are no shower facilities here unless you have your own solar heated water bag. In that case, there are private facilities in which you can hang your bag for a shower. A great idea! The road in is narrow, but don't fear, it's one way. A great place to stay not too far away from Greymouth and Hokitika.
South Island ▷ Fiordland ▷ Manapouri ▷
A great location for the Doubtful Sound cruise as you can walk to the harbour.
The owner was very helpful even lending us a couple of kayaks for a lake paddle. The area can become a bit crowded so the only down side was that with only 2 showers and 2 toilets, availability was a bit limited.
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Waikawa ▷
What a magic place.
This was the best camping spot in our entire trip. Each powered spot is private and non powered campers can also tuck away. The facilities certainly are basic, but the $2 showers have a quirkiness that makes them special. The beach offers good swimming and the dolphins are friendly. A short walk away you might be lucky to spot a penguin or two early evening. The kiosk offers some basic items and there is a surf lesson possible. Walk around the cliff tops for a great view of the rugged coastline.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Springfield ▷
This spot is a great first night out of Christchurch or last night before return.
There is a kitchen, washing machine, dump station and garbage facilities. Roy the caretaker is friendly, helpful and wonderfully laid back. We stayed here March 2016 and highly recommend it. The rate for a powered or non-powered site is fair with showers $1. No coins? Don't fret, Roy will help you out. There is a great coffee shop nearby and Springfield Hotel offers a bistro meal or pub grub on a Monday. Both within a 15 minute walk. Fuel is also available. The camp ground backs onto farming land so is peaceful. Yes there is a train nearby, but you really don't notice it. Oh, and for you Simpson's fans, while in Springfield, don't forget to pose for a pic in the big donut.
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Christchurch ▷
Randall and Road Runners was all that was expected - fantastic.
Nothing was too hard, all requests met and the Queenie ran like a dream. Thanks team for a great NZ experience. If returning, we would have no hesitation in booking with you again and will most certainly be recommending you to other NZ travellers.
