NZ has a few penguin species and they're genuinely wild encounters, not zoo stuff. The big one is the Hoiho, the Yellow-eyed Penguin, one of the rarest in the world with fewer than 200 breeding pairs left. Coastal Otago is where you've got the best shot at them. Katiki Point near Moeraki has the largest single settlement, and it's free, scenic, and well worth the detour. On the Otago Peninsula, old internet posts will have you thinking you can just wander down to a public beach and see them, but that's not really the case anymore. Dusk Is Your Friend
Timing matters. Penguins come ashore in the evening, so late afternoon to dusk is when you want to be in position. At Roaring Bay near Nugget Point, your chances are slim these days but not zero. Bring decent binoculars. On the West Coast, Monro Beach is a different species altogether, Fiordland Crested Penguins nest there from August to mid-January. It's a 30-40 minute walk in and only accessible at the nesting site around low tide. Go near dusk, keep your distance, and don't be the person who gets too close and stops the chicks getting fed.
