A solid aquarium stop in Napier, and genuinely one of the better places in NZ to see a kiwi up close. They tend to be active here, running around and making noise, which isn't always the case at other spots. The mix of native and international species keeps it interesting beyond just the fish tank circuit. Alligators, tuatara, blue penguins, reef sharks, sea turtles. There's more variety than the modest exterior suggests.
The feeding sessions are worth timing your visit around. Sharks and penguins being fed draws the crowd for good reason, and the staff put on a decent show. It's compact enough to do in an hour or two, which suits families well, especially with the beachfront playground right next door on Marine Parade. The swim with sharks experience gets strong reviews if you're after something a bit more hands-on.
