4.0/5
Another great location provided by the Wairoa DC.
Plently of flat sites with views out into the bay. There is a toilet block with a cold water shower on site. The beach is flat and sandy and good for swimming, and Mussels can be collected off the rocks at low tide. The only downside during our stay was the bay and beach was covered in masses of smelly decaying sea weed including rubbish, such as old cans plastic bags and bottles.

5.0/5
The first photogragh depicting this site is of the DOC camp at the Pinnacles and not at Ngawi itself.
The camping site at Ngawi is on the foreshore opposite the firestation and community hall. It is a superb location with clean toilets and nearby is a trailer outlet selling lovely fish & chip, ice creams milk etc. On sunny evening one can see the sun setting behind the South Island's Kaikoura ranges.

This is an amazing site provided by the Western bay DC.
During 2014 the DC have carried out a lot of work on the reserve and changed the parking rules. The road is now paved with kerb and channeling with marked parking for day visitors. Self contained vans have been allocated the grassed are in the middle of the reserve and the 3 vans limitation has been removed. Once the grassed area in the middle is full no more campers are permitted.

A great friendly spot on the beach for self contained vans.
Some sites have good views of the ocean. It can be a little noisy with the logging trains passing close behind the camp. Good fishing for surf casters and kontiki fishers.
North Island ▷ Wairarapa ▷ Featherston ▷
4.0/5
The site is about 8 kms from Featherston and is a large flat grassed area beside the lake.
Clean toilets and a very quiet peaceful place to over night.
North Island ▷ Wairarapa ▷ Ngawi ▷
3.5/5
This site is in a valley so is subject to very strong wind, in particular in southerlies, although there are some sheltered areas among trees.
During our stay gale force winds blew up the valley and blew some campers tents down and even being in a camper we were rocked about all night. Other than that it is a good site and a short walk up into the pinnacles.
North Island ▷ Taupo Region ▷ Turangi ▷
3.5/5
Great night stop over with views up the Lake and hot springs are nearby for a dip.
Has toilets and a dump station, however the dump station was blocked and full to the brim so couldn't be used. Apart from the condition of the dump station it is a good safe free stop over.
North Island ▷ Tairāwhiti Gisborne ▷ Wairoa ▷
4.5/5
Very pleasant sheltered spot beside an estuary with some views of the ocean.
Has toilets and rubbish bins, well done Wairoa DC
North Island ▷ Waikato ▷ Raglan ▷
1.5/5
A large flat quiet area set back from the Raglan Estuary.
However considering the state of the toilets and cold water shower, that require urgent cleaning,.at $10 per person per night, the price was a little expensive.
Raglan was not motorhome friendly and if the district wants tourist visiting the area and contributing to the local economy the Waikato DC must provide camping areas, compared to other local bodies they are well behind the eight ball. It was our intention to stay a few nights, but due to what we found we stayed only one and wont be going back.
North Island ▷ Bay of Plenty ▷ Ohope ▷
4.0/5
A safe quiet spot for 5 self contained vehicles tucked away to the right of the boat ramp.
It is a grassy site but low lying so can be very soft and can flood in wet weather. There is a clean toilet block in the reserve and good swimming and fishing in the tidal estuary. As the area is large the council could and should make more sites available.
North Island ▷ Wairarapa ▷ Featherston ▷

Didn't reach the camp due to the condition of the road at the first ford.
Couldn't get the camper up the small bank on the far side of the ford, however freedom camping was available on the foreshore in front of the small baches or cribs.
North Island ▷ Tairāwhiti Gisborne ▷ Opotiki ▷

A very quiet beach side camp a few kms from Opotiki that has great sea views.
Facilities clean and tidy and the staff are very friendly.

A lovely camp sited on the upper Tauranga Harbour.
It has a great hot pool facility and very friendly staff.
North Island ▷ Hawkes Bay ▷ Te Awanga ▷
4.0/5
Great spot beside the beach with great sea views.
Plenty of good sites on hard packed grass surface. Can be exposed to strong wind off the sea in northly quarter winds, and a little noisy at day break due to the bird blasts at the nearby vineyards. Otherwise a great site.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Karamea ▷
4.0/5
A delightfull camp at the end of the road beside the Kohaihai River mouth and start of the heaphy track.
While the sea is very dangerous for swimming the river is very safe, however if you do go swimming you have to brave the swarms of sandflies.
South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷ Blenheim ▷
5.0/5
Another great DOC camp.
Plently of shade and shelter from wind amoung the trees set a little back from a flat sandy beach. For those prepared to get wet there is a lot of mussels to be collected. New toilet facilities have recently been installed. Well done DOC

The best DOC site visited yet. Plenty of mussels can be collected from the rocks towards Cape campbell.

What a little gem of a place beside the Mokihinui River mouth.
The grounds are well laid out and beautifully kept. There is a funky cafe area to dine in and watch the cheeky Wekas in the garden. There is also good fishing for the fishos when the sea is calm, remember it is a West Coast location that offen has very rough sea conditions

Could be a nice spot, area to restrictive and crowded.
DOC could do better, for that matter in all their parks in Westland.

A small grassy site overlooking the beach, with great views.
Great for surfers and beach goers. Very muddy around the toilet block that requires attention, other wise a good site. A donations of $5 per van is requested and in my view is worth it.
South Island ▷ Southland ▷ Tuatapere ▷

A wild location due to the prevailing winds, although some shelter can be gained by parking in the spaces between the tall flax bushes.
There are toilets, fresh water, great flat sandy beach and plenty of mussels on the rocks at low tide.

A small sheltered camp with tidy facilities, but a pity the operators weren't a little more friendly.
Prices were a little high for what you got.

Good facilities. Would like to return when the whitebait are running

Great sea views from the camp sites and seeing the seals and dolphins, but as the camp is beside the State Highway it is very noisy at night from passing heavy vehicles.
South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷ Blenheim ▷
2.5/5
A strangely set out camp that causes restrictions as to the number of campers and where one can park.
The fencing aarrangement has obviously been designed by a Govt Servant, who hasn't a clue what he or she was doing. In windy conditions or when vehicles enter and leave the park, it is a very dusty . The only thing going for the site is the clean toilets and being by the sea.

Apart from two abandoned old buses taking up good flat sites, its a good camp by a lovely beach, can get a little windy though.
Very clean toilet facilities. By the way its not free, $5 per night.

A lovely spot to camp by the sea.
Safe bathing in the rock pools when the tide was out. For a small fee a permit is issued to camp along this coastline that covers rubbish collect etc. A great scheme that should be considered by other local authorities around the country.
