Paradise for nature lovers!
Diverse birdlife on the esturary. Abundant cockle beds. Stands of native giants in a beautiful bush and esturary walk behind the camp. Very peaceful. We came for one night but stayed 3. Excellent base from which to explore the Catlins. Leanne is helpful and accommodating. Camp is well organized and clean.

Helpful and friendly staff - even when we rocked up late and without booking.
Very peaceful and awoke to loud birdsong which was cool. Facilities are a bit dated and smelly but serve a purpose. Beautiful sunrise views.

Beautiful campsite.
very quiet and peaceful, close to a forest with a lot of birds and an inlet with sea lions and spoonbill. Good showers with free water and well equipped klitchen. We could even use the fireplacxe to heat up the kitchen. Great place and probable best of our trip.

Beautifully situated campsite near bush land and an estuary.
More bellbirds and tuis than I've heard anywhere else. Now 200mb free wifi. Good showers well equipped kitchen with log fire. Sandy beaches with sea lions plus nugget point with yellow eyed penguins and waterfalls near by. We are staying 3 nights and doing day trips as a break from a month of moving around

Fairly nice campsite, especially when it's not too busy, on the edge of an estuary (great kayaking).
Good facilities. Only downside during my stay was the excessive perfume/insecticide which was automatically spraying constantly in the men's bathroom (and presumably also the women's); the place reeked of the stuff and it clung to clothes for days.

Very rude, aggressive and angry owner.
Not dog friendly. My daughter and I booked for 5 nights with our two dogs. At time of booking asked for site away from facilities and not near throughfare. Given a Site next to entrance road, toilet block and main throughfare to the beach! Dogs were unsettled, barking due to foot traffic through our site, remote control cars running through site. They barked no more than 5 minutes each time. On two different days of the 4 we stayed the owner asked us to stop them barking. We immediately quieted them down quickly (1min at most). Note the barking was under 5 mins when he came over and it was always daytime. At least one of us was with them always. They were NEVER off lead. We and dogs were gone most of each day and were in bed by 8:30pm each night QUIET! We were never informed of any complaints from fellow campers. On our last evening having arrived back to camp about 5:30pm from all day trip (with dogs) we where standing on the road chatting with some campers (they were petting the dogs) when the dogs barked. Owner appeared & angrily, in front of everyone, said “Silence those dogs, or you can leave. In fact leave now. Pack up and go now”. I was embarrassed and humiliated. He could have come and discussed this privately at our site. As we packed up several campers came to express their concern about where we would go and that they felt it was unfair and the dogs had been no bother. There was a big very loud music party one night, allowed to continue until after 2:30am - pity the owner was less inclined to remove this source of noise! Finally Owner made my daughter cry when she went to collect her cellphone from him after it was found and handed in. He insinuated the phone was not hers, that he’d called the police! We left, I was too scared & upset to ask for a refund for the last day & none was offered. We are quiet & respectful people, I have been camping for more than 48 years and never experienced anyone like this before.

Your dog bit the the elderly gentleman standing beside you in driveway that is why you were asked to remove the dog After you left the site beside you complained about your dogs around their children .This is the first time I have asked a dog to be removed and at this stage will not be allowing them over Christmas again. And yes police were called on behalf of the gentleman re the bite .
We are a family friendly motor camp if there is an issue with anything speak to us

After 2 hours travelling to the Pounawea Camp for a camp with 6 adults and 10 keas and cubs we arrived and were told to go some where else as the owner could not find our booking that was confirmed by
email 4/2/ 2014 after 10minutes of checking his emails he did give us a small site so we would not moan about it later. Is this the way to treat customers? As it was otago anniversary day we had no other option but to stay BUT we will never go back I would give 0/10 for service as he was rude and so arrogant.

Great spot!
Arrived at Pounawea late and in the dark and had no idea where to go.. Called the free call number and received great directions to the camp. Warm welcome on arrival even though we interrupted the poor mans dinner! Lovely hot shower, modern facilities... though in winter, shower/toilet complex freezing!!
Woke to an amazing view of the beach (didn't even know it was there, having arrived in the dark!)
