We rented a motorhome from Maui Christchurch on November 17th, returning it on November 28th.
While rushing to the airport with our 8-month-old, we forgot to empty a small cabinet behind the passenger seat containing priceless items: an expensive GoPro with irreplaceable baby footage (no backups), baby camera accessories, and my son’s $130 lunchbox. These items are incredibly valuable to us.
I immediately contacted Maui, filled out the lost property forms, and spoke to multiple people at the head office. Despite promises of callbacks, no one has followed up, and I’ve hit a wall trying to get through to the Christchurch branch—always busy and unreachable. The contrast in customer service is shocking. Before payment, Maui was quick to answer every question. After returning the vehicle, the service has been non-existent. This experience is deeply upsetting, and I expected far better service for the price we paid.

Driving around New Zealand was the best decision we’d taken to enjoy our holidays.
We hired a 6 Beth motorhome and it was adequate to our 3 persons group, plenty of space, vehicle in good conditions and well equipes to our needs. The only thing we consider that could be better is the first explanation about the vehicle. It could be done more slowly and also be more detailed.

Best experience ever!
My husband & I ( from UK) spent 3 weeks in NZ, 10 days of which was touring in a Maui campervan which we booked through Rankers. We are both very inexperienced travellers but were made to feel at ease and had all the guidance and back up whilst out travelling that we could ask for! By far the best way to travel via campervan especially whilst being on a slightly tight time frame. Saw/experienced things that we never would have come across without having the freedom to roam in the campervan. Thank you!

Our Cascade was well equipped in general, and in very good condition.
It was a pleasure to drive - not going to win any drag races, but went comfortably up any hill it had to, and did not feel at all like driving a truck. The Maui staff were friendly and helpful. The only problem they need to fix is pickup. Since giving campervans to their customers is the core of their busines, it's not like they don't know how long on average it will take. But despite that, they are unable to run their pickup on time. This did not phase us at all, because we'd read about this already, and had a free day ahead after picking up the van, so we were chilled. But at least if you are picking up in peak time, book a slot earlier than you think you'll need and have your own entertainment for while you wait. Other than that - excellent. Would chose them again for sure.

It took over 2 hours to complete the pick up process, which was an inconvenience to us. Prior to taking the camper-van it was discovered that the gas bottle was empty and the water tank had not been refilled, which also delayed our departure. The instruction sheet for the camper-van was German, not English, it appeared that the exterior of the camper-van had not been cleaned, the wing mirrors were dirty, we had to clean them so that they could be used. My wife also informed me that the toilets at the pick up complex were very dirty and untidy. Apart from the pick up experience, everything else was fine.

We were unlucky and had a road stone.
The waiting time of several hours has been mentioned already… this wasn‘t the worst for us…
We have our private insurance for breakage of glass. All our insurance needs is
- pick up and return protocol
- copy of signed rental agreement
I have asked a copy of this documents when we returned the campervan and I was assured they will be sent to me by mail. They haven‘t been sent… so I asked several times by mail. And again they haven‘t been sent till today…
I am not getting several hundreds of dollars from my insurance because this company is not able to send the basic documents for our rental agreement… don‘t want to mention that this would be the minium legally required for the rental and we paid several thousands dollars for the camper!

This is my first time travelling in NZ and i decided to travel the south island by a campervan.
After doing some researched online, I have chosen the Maui Ultima 2 berth not just because it was spacious for two people and also the car supposed to be new (under 2.5 years). However, the car provided was with dents and damages. The worst part was the customer service. The staff refused to give brief introduction as everything could be found in the apps. And the same staff refused to answer any questions and asked us to google it instead……that was a terrible experience.
Later, it was found out the waste water hose was missing……and, luckily, there was another staff helped us to check the campervan again and she also gave us some tips and introduction of the car….

I used Maui over Britz (same company) as they offer the newer vans, presumably before they get moved on to Britz.
Booking was pretty straightforward but all in all it was a poor experience from a customer service point of view.
- I asked to pick up the van at 10:30am. Booked an expensive one to make sure that it was up to scratch.
- The night before I had called to say we wouldn't be there until about 11:30.
- I went through the check in process and was told that nobody would be with me for 30 mins because they were all on lunch break. I find that very odd, especially as you can book a collection for any time of day. After an hour and a half of waiting and excuses, I was told that there had been a mistake and the van was not even cleaned. My girlfriend had been waiting at another rental place and I was supposed to be picking her up after collection. She stood at the side of the road for the best part of two hours. Maui said i could borrow their car to go and collect her.
- All of our belongings were outside the office so they said I could bring them in and leave them behind the desk while I went to collect her. No-one helped as I brought a huge amount of stuff in on my own.
- As i got in the car to drive off, someone came out and said that actually the van was ready and they had misread the number plate. I waited another 15 mins whilst someone went to collect it and then carried all my belongings back out.
- I drove to collect my girlfriend and 30 mins into our drive, we got a phone call saying that the freezer lid had not been reinstalled and that we had to come back to get it.
- In the end we left at 16:30 from a 10:30 booking. They offered us a bottle of wine and said we would talk about compensation on collection.
- The grey water was full.
- The radio never worked.
- The TV aerial was hanging off the roof and I had to take it to a repair shop for them.
- Lockdown came in and they tried to charge me extra to return it to the local depot.
All in: poor!

It’s a shame as the van we had and our trip was actually great but on return we left some property in one of the cupboards which we realised when we got back to UK.
I contacted immediately offering to pay costs of return on my credit card. After several emails and 2 live online chats with customer services I have been repeatedly ignored by the Christchurch branch, not even an apology! I can only assume someone has my property and is unwilling to admit it. I’m appalled at the terrible customer services. Nobody cares now they’ve had our money and we’ve left the country. I’m furious!

They may be the largest but certainly NOT the GREATEST.
!
There Customer services and central (calling- centre) replies are RUBBISH. It is foolhardy these days to pretend that the Customer Services Manager does not have a phone number, after you drive 220Kms back to Auckland Branch to collect the Hook-up cable they left of the Van! To make matters worse - they realised this after we left there base (they found the cable on the ground where van parked up) that afternoon and FAILED to make contact with us by phone (to our NZ Mobile on record) OR Email!
The c/service manager (I think called Pheyra) was the most useless employee that I met at Auckland Branch - Pathetic and could not " manage " any problem put to her!!
After much advice from people we met on the cruise, it is impossible to visit both N and S Islands within 14 days hire planned so we tried to change our return to be back to Auckland after 14 days in North Island with an idea of doing the South Island on a further visit. MAUI insisted that this would not be possible unless we agreed to pay another £1003 pounds to our UK agent (Trailfinders) not to return Van to CHRISTCHURCH. We thought we would save the ferry and one-way costs and hopefully see all of N.Island in 14 days. Our dispatcher at Maui Auckland agreed this made more sense and he was sure there was no need to worry, he would just talk to his manager on duty, who looked up on our file and said "No way- Not Possible". Our dispatcher ( who showed us around the van & signed paperwork) was really disappointed at this "Money Grabbing" scenario where there were already too many vehicles in Christchurch on our return date! He kindly cancelled the NZ$ 250 one-way fee that was to be charged!
So, all in all, Maui are not the best and they did not accept all of my descriptions regarding the poor design features of a nearly new van (6 months old) where they had provided us with a three berth ULTIMA van (Extra bed and seat behind driver) instead!

We booked and paid for a Maui motorhome in February, only to arrive at the Auckland Depot in November and be told there were no Maui motorhomes available (unless we wanted to wait 4 hours!) so we had to
take a Britz (older model). On inspection of the vehicle, my husband asked for the tyres to be replaced, as the ones on the vehicle were bald. We also asked for the windscreen to be properly cleaned inside and out. This was not done. We had to buy our own window cleaner and cloths to make sure we had a safe windscreen to see the road. The whole van was in an appalling state - not at all clean! On the course of our 2 weeks, we had several issues. The cutlery drawer catch broke so we had to buy a roll of heavy duty tape to keep the drawer closed while driving. The CD player didn't work properly and kept stopping and starting. The awning was absolutely disgusting! - mouldy and dirty - obviously never cleaned! After passing through a toll road, we tried to log into the NZ toll payment site but realised we needed a notice number to pay our toll. We phoned the Maui number on our key ring only to be told by the girl on the phone that she had no idea what we were talking about and not to worry about it. After returning to Australia, our card was charged $35 by Maui for processing our $9.90 toll fee!!!! We just can't win!!!! AVOID this company at ALL COSTS! They don't give a toss about customer service! It's all about the $$$$$$ WE WILL NEVER USE THIS COMPANY AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very disappointed with the service and information provided by MAUI.
I have scheduled our transfer online for 9:00 am. We were on site at 8:30 am. We were only able to take the vehicle at 0:30 pm. We were constantly put off, that the vehicle was still in the inspection or still on the way.
Since we needed a vehicle with a bike rack and this was only possible with the elite option, we had to cancel our existing contract and conclude a new contract. For the cancellation we had to pay the cancellation fees. The elite option includes a vehicle younger than one year and the option of a bike rack. The vehicle was exactly one year old with a lot of damage. Locally we noticed that actually all vehicles mounted a bike rack.
To be sure of getting a bike rack, we had to pay cancellation fees and complete an elite option, although the bike rack was also available on older vehicles and the vehicle was exactly one year old and damaged.
A great service or !!!!

I have rented a camper van for 2 weeks with MAUI from Christchurch , I had selected and paid a premium thinking that MAUI camper van are well maintained and based on previous good experiences with MAUI
in Australia .
The plate number of the van I got was KWK 734 and this van have an alignment problem for the direction , always pulling to the left .
During my trip I went to MAUI Queenstown to ask them to look at it , they refused to do so as they answer that I should first book an appointment .
When I returned the camper van after doing 3000 km , I complained to the staff , but they refused to take the complain and just answered that their camper van are all checked and good .
Apart from the mis alignement of the direction , the bread toaster was also broken when we took the camper van , which show that in reality they don't check anything between 2 rentals .
After I came back from New Zealand , I got an email from MAUI asking me to review my experience
As my review was not positive for them , they just did not include it into their website .
My suggestion is avoid MAUI NZ , this not worth to paid a premium for such camper van and the way they handle customers is terrible . They just dont care !

This first time we rented with Brtiz in 2016 at the Christchurch branch which had some issues with LPG leaking in our camper.
This was was dangerous and major hassle to get corrected away from the branch. Our second rental, and likely last, was through Queeenstown maui branch which was not so good. Our campervan was ok at the end of the day and we loved our tour of the south island. Expect sub par service from the staff during pickup/drop off. Very much recommend that you closely inspect every component of the vehicle before you leave the branch. Our initial camper had 1 bald tire, a bad battery, and engine troubles (which we found as soon as we left the branch). The second camper they replaced the first one with, only because it had engine trouble, was ok but had few issues like water heater not working and step being broken off. Took over 4 hours of ordeal to finally get a proper camper. Return of the vehicle went fairly well and the lady that checked us in was nice and helpful. Suggest walking to the airport and avoiding their shuttle van due to safety concerns though. I got a 4 inch gash in my head when trying to get in the van due to an open piece of sheet metal near the door that had no protection on it. The staff at the branch did their best to try and stop the bleeding and cart me and my family off to the emergency room. They just dumped me off emergency room front door and never came inside or checked on me later. Suggest to use another camper rental company or at least the Christchurch branch.
