South Island ▷ Queenstown Region ▷
The Queenstown Region is stacked with walking options, but a few stand out. Ben Lomond is the big one - a serious day out with views that make the ascent worth every step. The trick is getting up early before the gondola starts releasing hikers around 9:30-10am and the trail turns into a procession. Out near Glenorchy, Lake Sylvan is my pick for best effort-to-reward ratio - a 1.5-hour return walk to a genuinely beautiful lake, and the Routeburn Nature Walk is an easy hour that suits pretty much anyone. Same advice applies out here: stay the night and go early to beat the tour buses.

If hiking isn't your whole thing, there's a solid spread of other land activities here. Cycling around Lake Dunstan near Cromwell on an e-bike is genuinely top notch - crazy views around every corner and manageable on an e-bike where it'd be a real slog on a regular one. Back in Queenstown, ziplines through the forest canopy are a fun way to see the town from above, and horse trekking out of Glenorchy into the high country is the kind of thing that sticks with you - use RANKERS for 10% off. For the full adrenaline crowd, the bungy options are world-class and genuinely terrifying in the best way.
One thing worth knowing: a lot of the best free and low-cost land activities here - the walks especially - are spread across a wide area. Your campervan is actually an asset. Park up near Glenorchy the night before and you'll have the trails to yourself in the morning. That early start is the move, every time.
