South Island ▷ Queenstown Region ▷
The Queenstown Region isn't the first place you'd think of for art and culture, but there's genuinely good stuff here if you know where to look. Arrowtown is the standout. The Chinese Miners Settlement is a real slice of NZ history - stone huts, cold valley, gold rush era - and the Lakes District Museum next door is well put together and worth an hour of anyone's time. Not a lot of flash, just solid local history done well.
Promo code RANKERS - good deal done!
Central Otago wine is the real deal and the Queenstown Wine Trail is a good way into it without having to drive yourself between cellar doors. If you'd rather go under your own steam, the bike hire tours that take you through the vineyards are top notch - promo code RANKERS gets you 10% off, which is a nice bonus on a good day out. The riding is scenic and the wine at the end tastes better for it.
Glenorchy has a high country horse trek that's more farm experience than tourist tick-box - proper landscape, proper horses, and RANKERS saves you 10% there too. In Queenstown itself there's a Maori cultural show and a few art experiences, but honestly the wine trail and Arrowtown history are where this region earns its stripes for culture.
