South Island ▷ Fiordland ▷
Fiordland camping is less about finding a nice spot and more about playing the game right. The whole point of being in a campervan here is that you can sleep on the Milford Road itself, ahead of the tour bus wave that rolls out of Queenstown at 6:30am. Cascade Creek Campsite is the one to aim for - it's the closest DOC site to Milford Sound, it's huge so you'll find a spot, and there's a 45-minute rainforest walk to Lake Gunn right next door. Fair warning: the toilets are pretty smelly, but that's DOC life and your van's toilet sorts that.

If you'd rather have hot showers and a proper setup, Te Anau has a solid run of holiday parks right on the lakefront. The Te Anau Lakeview Holiday Park is one of the standouts - lake views, clean facilities, and it puts you in the right spot to get an early start on Milford before the buses catch up with you. Staying in town still gets you ahead of the Queenstown traffic, just with fewer sandflies.
Over near Manapouri - which is your base for Doubtful Sound - there are a couple of good holiday park options too. The Possum Lodge Holiday Park sits right on the edge of Fiordland National Park in beech forest, and the Manapouri Motels and Holiday Park gets good marks for the mountain views and the quiet. Staying the night here means you can grab the early morning Doubtful Sound cruise - which is cheaper, quieter, and well worth it. Use promo code RANKERS on the cruise booking to save a bit on top.
