South Island ▷ West Coast ▷
The West Coast is long and remote, and knowing where the full-facility parks sit is genuinely useful. Haast is the big one to note in the south - it's the last proper holiday park for a good stretch of road, and there's a small store on site for basics. Around Hokitika there are solid options including beachfront spots worth checking out, and if Fox Glacier is on your itinerary the Top 10 there is well set up. Franz Josef has the Rainforest Retreat, which has some nice little nooks tucked in among the trees if you want something with a bit more character than a flat concrete pad.
If you're heading up to Karamea, Gentle Annie on the way is one of my favourites on the whole coast. DIY pizza oven, natural maze, real family energy. And at Punakaiki, the Beach Camp is ideally placed - close enough to walk to the Pancake Rocks at sunset, and right near the free glowworm cavern for a night wander. That's a good overnight spot.
For Greymouth there are a couple of options worth looking at too, including the seaside Top 10 and Jacksons Retreat if you want something a bit more campervan-focused.
