Information

Welcome to the Kawatiri Beach Reserve

The Kawatiri Beach Reserve is the result of thousands of hours of volunteer labour from Westport residents.
We want you to enjoy this place as much as we do, so rather than leave no trace, please leave it better for the
us and the visitors that will follow in your footsteps.

Throughout the beautiful Buller / Kawatiri District freedom camping areas like this one are provided to assist in
the preservation of our stunning coast and inland forest areas. Please use these sites and their facilities to
protect the environment for those who live here, our visitors, and future generations to come.

You can do your part to help keep this place beautiful by:
 Keeping your stay to a maximum of 2 nights
 Using the toilet and rubbish bins provided. If the bins are full, please take your rubbish to another bin
elsewhere to prevent the local birdlife from spreading your rubbish far and wide
 Only staying overnight in the designated area, as shown on the map
 Respecting those you share the site with. Please keep noise to a minimum, and your gear well
contained
 Keeping access ways clear for other users
 Calling 111 in the event of a fire. Please ensure any bonfire sites are clear of rubbish before you leave
them.
 Rubbish bins for disposal are available in Punakaiki, Westport, Hector, Karamea and Reefton.
 Dump stations are available on The Esplanade in Westport, The Strand in Reefton and at the Cobden
Bridge in Greymouth.

Good spot, right on the beach. Exposed if windy! Great toilets and if all the spots are taken go around to shingle beach. No one there and it is allowed to freedom camp for self contained only! No toilets at the second spot!

Easy to find but very crowded. The only water tap did not work. It was cool to camp this close to the beach, which was covered in driftwood, but I would not stay there again.

A great camp spot with several spots available for vans. Rubbish bins available along with a well-maintained toilet. The beach is nearby (2 min walk) and it makes for a lovely sunset walk along all of the driftwood and soft, white sand. Friendly council worker pops by in the morning to ensure everything is in good order and that everyone is respectful to the surroundings. An excellent spot!

Nice place to stop at the beach, easy to find, busy with lots of vans. Single toilet and tap, recycle bins. Lots of driftwood on beach - great for a walk if not too windy. Council worker there in morning to clean very helpful

Large area right next to the beach. Single drop toilet, with a sink! Was quite smelly in the evening, but was all clear in the morning... may have been from the heat of the day. We liked it.

Pretty good place ! Space for approximately 20 vans. Toilets are clean.
You feel a bit like on a carpark and not on a beach but it’s still better than nothing !

Peaceful, beautiful spot right on the beach. Clean toilets and covered picnic area. Busy but not packed when we pulled in at 6 pm, great to sleep & wake
up to the waves.

Beautiful place. Very full. We arrived at 6.30pm On a Sunday in March to find just 1 place left.
We strolled on to the beach to watch the sunset. Fabulous. Didn't use the toilet as we have our own.
