Very pretty little place.
I'm grateful to the other commenters who listed directions and also the exact coordinates of the gate, which was very helpful. Google maps will direct you to before the 3rd bridge, which is not accurate. 20 minutes down a gravel road, not pitted no holes at all thankfully.
Grassy field right on the river that runs behind it. Trout, eel, and some other small fish can be found in the river. Showed up around 8pm and met a couple young local kiwis who were having a campfire and cookout, we grilled up a fish together, spotted some eel, and looked at the stars. Very peaceful night, no other campers around 14 April 2026.

There is no longer free camping allowed at this site.
There is a wooden sign with the "no" symbol 🚫 over a campervan, meaning no free camping :/
There were some trucks parked here which I assume belong to people hiking the Urchin track or headed elsewhere overnight. There is cell service up here with OneNZ but no toilet etc, I believe the other reviews have this place confused with Urchin Campsite.
Also, be careful because Google will take you to a completely wrong location 10 mins away: Rangipo Power station parking.

Arrived 7:45PM, people parked oddly and very far apart but still a few spaces.
Short gravel road up, should be fine for all vehicles. Pressed gravel carpark very close to the ocean.
One long drop toilet, pretty clean, no bad smell thankfully. Here for only one night so no real complaints, however idk what everyone is saying about good cell service. I have a SIM from both Spark and One NZ and my reception was bad on both lol: 1 bar on Spark and 1-2 on One NZ.
Still a nice place! Good stopping point before Karamea
