Decent stay for one night and pretty views of the lake.

There is plenty of space and quite a few people seemed to park outside the free camping area closer to the lake, although no one seems to monitor this. We arrived late at night but felt quite safe as there were a number of campervans/motor homes. It can be a distance to the toilets and they’re not the most well maintained but again, it was ok for one night. Possibly the main downside is it’s all on grass so if you have concerns about your vehicle getting stuck after heavy rain, it may not be the best place to stay. Fortunately, despite experiencing heavy rain ourselves, our campervan moved away fine in the morning.

We came here after visiting Hobbiton, arrived at around 7pm and could easily got a place for our car.

Clean toilet, quiet night despite of proximity to the road.

Very nice place, perfect if you have dogs.

Lots of space, but only the side near toilet can be overnight.

Lovely spot with lots of space!

    Clean flush toilets!

    No dump or drinking water!

    Came in very late.

Lots of campers, close camping but still private n quiet. Toilets were clean enough (wet ground n grassy from use from dew n wet ground overnight) had toilet paper and soap, no showers at all (as other reviews indicate). Good easy camping.

Toilets are clean and always open.

As it is only around 15 min from hobbiton movie set we chose to try this one.

We arrived late around 11pm or 11:30pm something and still found a Spot. Plenty of space there. You should not Park on the sea-side, but no idea if someone is actually checking. Clean toilets with running tap. No drinking-water.

Stayed here for one night as we had an early tour of Hobbiton.

Lots of spaces, quiet, great views of the lake and swimming. Toilet was clean, but just one w/c in the men's.

    Would recommend.

Loads of space and right on the lake, good toilet block.

BUT very busy and noisy with boats, jet skis etc. So depends if you mind that, even on a Sunday morning!

Lots of space -- we had no problem finding a spot when we arrived after sundown.

Close and easy access from Hobbiton. Some noise from other campers but none from the road. Basic bathrooms, no electricity (very dark at night!) and no trash cans or potable water. Pretty spot.

Free campground with flushing toilets (we had to bring our own loo roll though).

No issue with getting spaces for us.

Grassy field so had to be careful parking after it rained.

Far enough away from the highway that it was pretty quiet, would stay again.

Easy to get to, pretty spot.

Parking on grass not far from the river. We arrived at 20:30, and there were less than 10 other vans with plenty of spots still available, and more folks arrived later. Toilet on site was decent. Would definitely stay here again. Lapwings, swamp harriers, scaup, cormorants, and other birds around. Fun to watch the water skiers

    Fantastic spot for a night.

About 8 other campers all respectfully distanced. Sunset was great here. Toilets probably haven't been cleaned since the millenium but if you're self contained it's not really an issue. Love it.

This location was where we spend our 1st night in a campervan after renting directly from Auckland.

Arriving just after dark, there were no other campers. Parked near the water edge. There's a guard rail to prevent going too near. Very quiet and peaceful. Next morning was beautiful! Only us and wonderful sounds from ducks, geese and birds. There's a good clean toilet facilities. Nice place for short walk. I won't mind coming back!

This is a beautiful spot and we would highly recommend staying here.

    Toilets are basic but clean.

There is a map as you enter the park, double check this as it shows you the areas you are allowed to camp. Do not park right by the lake, this is restricted.

Great place to stay for a night.

It was very busy though, as a lot of people stay longer. Can't blame them, beautiful spot. We stayed out of the designated zone because we read the sign wrong but no one accosted us. Has a toilet, no shower or drinking water. Noise was to a minimum, but boats do start up early. Water skiers. Will go back.
