Loads of space and right on the lake, good toilet block. BUT very busy and noisy with boats, jet skis etc. So depends if you mind that, even on a Sunday morning!
Perfect place to stop for a night if you are self contained! Plenty of spaces and nice and quiet area along the lake. We stayed here after doing the evening banquet Hobbiton Tour (highly recommend!) and it was the perfect stop before heading over to Waitomo.

Lots of places to stay. The parking is clean and large near to the water.
Very clean toilet with sink open 24/7. Felt safe, 5 camper vans present. Looking onto lake, this is a grass site.
Follow the road round and it is signposted. Thanks for the facilities!

Nice green spot by the river! Stayed here a night after visiting the Hobbiton Movie Set in April. There were a few other campervans but there was still plenty of space! Toilets were clean but were only lit by sunlight. Motorboats made some noise in the evening, but the place was quiet at night.
We enjoyed our freedom camping experience here, staying for one night after visiting Hobbiton. The bathrooms are clean and have flushing toilets, though no lighting at night. There were probably about 10 other camper vans here when we stayed, but there was still plenty of room and plenty of water views. The lake is very pretty but does attract some biting insects (maybe mosquitos? They didn't seem to be sandflies...). I definitely reccomend this spot if you're in Matamata and looking for a relaxing water view.
We stayed here for one night before visiting Hobbiton the next morning. After the day visitors had gone it was fairly quiet and there is loads of space so it was certainly not crowded, There were a few motor boats around until dusk and also in the morning but they were not intrusive as we were not parked near to the boat launching ramp. Also some traffic going to and from the water ski club but again nothing to cause any annoyance, Toilets basic and clean. Overall a nice spot to stop for the night.
Excellent spot for stopovers. Easy grass parking, right on the river. Quiet at night. Can get busy during the day with boaties but never had an issue finding a flat park.
Great free spot for self contained campers. Lots of space, quiet and ideal for Hobbiton as only 15 minutes drive. Park on grass wherever you like, no hard standing so probably not ideal when it's rained a lot.

Fantastic stop over. We went out of our way to find this and not at all disappointed. Only about 6 other campervans and motorhomes. Huge grassy area by the river. Next to NZ Bare Foot Skiers Club. Stayed on a Thursday night so very quiet. Enjoyed watching a few boats on the water but they had left by 8pm so no noise. Strictly self contained only. Please respect that.
We at Rankers NZ, love to meet travellers on the road and share in some of the freedom. That's why Rankers NZ invites you to come and stay for free at our chill riverside overnight parking area in the Motueka Valley at the top of the South Island.
Great place, good for self contained campers, does get crowded, not so good for dogs as day trippers don't always have theirs on leads, no water. The park at the end of the domain is wonderful. Dogs allowed. Water. Lakeside parking.
Great spot. Toilets were spotless. Ski boats do start early but didn't worry us.
We stayed here on a Wednesday night after doing the Hobbiton tour. We got there about 5pm and there were already 11 other campers. Even so, room for another 20 vans without feeling cramped. We reversed right up to the lake. All grass parking but very nice. Recommended.
