The Te Paki Stream sand dunes, just south of Cape Reinga, Northland, is a natural sandboarding fun park.
Grab anything hard and flat (boogie board, old real estate sign etc..) climb the dunes and have fun!
Be careful to lock your car as this place is a notorious place for crafty local thieves that lay in wait in the nearby bushes.

The sand dunes are amazing!
The walk up them is hard work but we had a ball going down. You can rent a board on site for $15 if you don’t have one and the Māori couple renting boards were really friendly, we had a great chat with them!

The sand dunes are incredible.
But go with your own smooth bottom board. The rental people on site in the car park are expensive and unfriendly. Otherwise great fun had by all.

An awesome place to visit the north of the North Island.
Some nice tracks around it, good camping places and you are able to go sandboarding.

We rented the sandboards a bit outside of the sand dune area - because renting at the spot closes at 5pm.
The sandboarding itself was first a bit scary, but after some training on baby hills, we enjoyed the speed a lot - definitely recommendable.

Funny activity, you can try some tricks with the board if you are brave enough.
Really sandy, some cleaning facilities would be nice.

Surfboarding at the beach down the hill.
A bit boring if you lie down, more exciting if you try to stand up.

Also, the boarding down the dunes was nice - you have to stand up!

Close your mouth during the slide and use sunglasses, the sand can enter everywhere.

Fast, may be painful but still one of the best things you can do up North. Free if you have a bodyboard, $15 to hire a bodyboard if needed.

Don't use a wooden or plastic board, even if it's waxed, that's not working on the sand.
Hire a board for $10-15, they know what's working.
Surfing itself is awesome!
