Yes the kids really love this. But if you’re reading this as an adult, this type of fun can pass us by as we get older.
On my last visit, I thought I’d leave this to my 14 year old son. Then my wife had a go, then I had a go. So glad I did. It’s an awesome time. Back to simplicity.
The safest way is to lie on your tummy, lean back and hold on. Very little can go wrong with this technique. I saw some folk trying on their knees or even their feet, and that didn’t always end so well. Go the tummy technique at least to start with.
Our fav spot is a walk straight up the easy access dune and then a little further on the flat plateau. Then it’s the next steep bit after that. It’s got some height so there's plenty of speed with a decent run out.
The sand gets really hot in summer. Socks are a good addition (along with water and sunscreen in your backpack).
The board hire is a reasonable $15. You really need cash as there's limited network coverage for a bank transfer.

Park your vehicle at Te Paki Stream car-park walk over the nearby sand dunes. It's a surreal experience.
If the car park gets full, there's another little area to the left, near the toilets.

Most fantastic walk of our trip in the North Island.
You can only go at low tide. But what an experience!! Takes 2-3 hours in total and don't forget to run down the dunes!
