We had an amazing road trip around NZ! One of my vest ever!!! And definitely it all started with Maui Campevan group. Especially about how the staff is well prepared. They do make all things set for you by the moment you left your plane until you get your campervan!!! The Maui's staff called Chelsea, who helped us with everything!! She was so much helpful and friendly !! We will for sure, next year come back!! But this time with all the family !!!!!!

The pick up experience was not what we expected, we booked in on line prior to the pick up, as we were informed by Maui that this would make the pick process quick, it did not. It took over 2 hours to complete the pick up process, which was an inconvenience to us. Prior to taking the camper-van it was discovered that the gas bottle was empty and the water tank had not been refilled, which also delayed our departure. The instruction sheet for the camper-van was German, not English, it appeared that the exterior of the camper-van had not been cleaned, the wing mirrors were dirty, we had to clean them so that they could be used. My wife also informed me that the toilets at the pick up complex were very dirty and untidy. Apart from the pick up experience, everything else was fine.

Horrible service. Booking fees are hidden - beware, as they will charge you huge fees for credit card use - which is NOT disclosed upfront. Even after booking this with an agent online, the fee was not disclosed. Only after getting the receipt I saw an additional $NZ 97. After hours online and multiple attempts to resolve there is no resolution. Very dishonest and terrible customer service.

I have rented a camper van for 2 weeks with MAUI from Christchurch , I had selected and paid a premium thinking that MAUI camper van are well maintained and based on previous good experiences with MAUI in Australia .

The plate number of the van I got was KWK 734 and this van have an alignment problem for the direction , always pulling to the left .

During my trip I went to MAUI Queenstown to ask them to look at it , they refused to do so as they answer that I should first book an appointment .

When I returned the camper van after doing 3000 km , I complained to the staff , but they refused to take the complain and just answered that their camper van are all checked and good .

Apart from the mis alignement of the direction , the bread toaster was also broken when we took the camper van , which show that in reality they don't check anything between 2 rentals .

After I came back from New Zealand , I got an email from MAUI asking me to review my experience

As my review was not positive for them , they just did not include it into their website .

My suggestion is avoid MAUI NZ , this not worth to paid a premium for such camper van and the way they handle customers is terrible . They just dont care !

This first time we rented with Brtiz in 2016 at the Christchurch branch which had some issues with LPG leaking in our camper. This was was dangerous and major hassle to get corrected away from the branch. Our second rental, and likely last, was through Queeenstown maui branch which was not so good. Our campervan was ok at the end of the day and we loved our tour of the south island. Expect sub par service from the staff during pickup/drop off. Very much recommend that you closely inspect every component of the vehicle before you leave the branch. Our initial camper had 1 bald tire, a bad battery, and engine troubles (which we found as soon as we left the branch). The second camper they replaced the first one with, only because it had engine trouble, was ok but had few issues like water heater not working and step being broken off. Took over 4 hours of ordeal to finally get a proper camper. Return of the vehicle went fairly well and the lady that checked us in was nice and helpful. Suggest walking to the airport and avoiding their shuttle van due to safety concerns though. I got a 4 inch gash in my head when trying to get in the van due to an open piece of sheet metal near the door that had no protection on it. The staff at the branch did their best to try and stop the bleeding and cart me and my family off to the emergency room. They just dumped me off emergency room front door and never came inside or checked on me later. Suggest to use another camper rental company or at least the Christchurch branch.

This was the 2nd time that we have hired from Maui, our first experience was great and we were delighted. This time was really disappointing and based on this experience there is unlikely to be a 3rd opportunity for Maui,.
The van we were given was over 2 yrs old, when we queried the condition were we advised that it was under 2.5 yrs therefore within terms. It had clear external damage which was noted.
We identified that internally it was not as clean as expected and smelt dirty, we were advised if we wanted it cleaned again it was a 3 hour wait. Having travelled 12,000 miles and on holiday for only 2 weeks , you do not expect to have to wait a further 3 hours to clean a van you have arranged to pick up!!! We were given a bottle of wine when I said I would do it. The note made on the form by the attendant was 'it was not as squeaky clean as expected'... (so patronising!!)
The fun begins and we discover over the course of the first couple of days:
Dashboard USB - does not work
Back window curtain- do not close due to string having been cut and tied up
All cupboard locks fail as you drive along at different times resulting in emptying onto the floor repeatedly - Gaffa tape purchased to tape cupboards closed
Fridge door flys open randomly and empties its contents - Gaffa tape used again!!
Rear side window- does not open
Handbrake sticks on and takes two hands to release - yes we all know about the beeping if it is not released, but this was different issue
The linen - old, faded and smelt musty - I have used better linen as dust sheets
The provided electric fan heated - switch was broken, and it did not work
Air con failed one day - we went to a garage as directed and the issue was resolved. We asked about all the other issues, but the garage recommended that we used the Gaffa tape as they could not doing anything without having the van for a few days.
Returning to the depot at the end of holiday, Maui could not be less interest...shame on you

We concur with several other reviews about Maui stating that the quality they deliver is bad and the service is even wors! When we tried to pickup a campervan we were send away, to come back in 1,5 hours. Maybe we would get our campervan then!! We booked a Mau River Elite (under 1 years old). That was not what we got. Besides the age: numerous things were not ok. The biggest problem a faulty elektrical systeem. After several calls with maui road assist they were not helping to solve our problems. Not even mentioning the oil warnings we got on the dashboard.

So quality: 0 points
Services: -10 points

This is my second time to relocate the motorhome. Last time with Jucy 2 years ago.
Pros:
1. Online support was excellent, they were fast and precise in their answering.
2. Very professional customer service at Auckland branch. Quick return procedure.
Cons:
1. Customer service at Christchurch branch was a disaster. Staff there were extremely slow and seem not carrying about their customers. 4 hours to wait to get a car!
2. They gave me a car with faulty water tank. I noticed it even without technical skills. First, the staff said it was due to the rain. Requested to be re-investigated by a technician (I do not want the car to broke down along the road, especially in a forest :) ). The car was not even checked by technician after 45 minutes when they promised to get the car. We asked then they said the car needed to be fixed. Another 45 min. To wait. After 1 hour they said the car is being fixed and we need to wait another 45 min. The manager offered us a free shuttle to the supermarket nearby the airport after 3 hours wait, but we were afraid of waiting few more hours to be picked up by them when the car is ready. Hence, we stayed. We requested another camper but they did not give it. Wait again, and after 3 hours they realized they could not fix the car and agreed to give another camper. The one we got was OK, except air conditioning was intermittently.
3. Microwave and electric plugs in the camper only work if the car is getting external electrical source.
4. The camper overall was old, much lower quality than the other one that I have driven.
5. No air conditioning at the back of the car (I had one with that option with another company). Since, people at the back suffered from hot summer.
6. The car provided seems dirty.
7. There hidden costs like road user charges for campervans that I have not come up with other car rental companies.

Very efficient and well organised when we collected the van. A number of helpful videos were provided and an app with campsites and reviews. The sat nav and material provided was helpful. The van was in good condition with all the bedding, equipment etc that we could need (though they forgot the coffee cafetière we should have had). We were very glad the van was an automatic transmission (some companies won’t guarantee)as it made some of the more mountainous and windy roads easier to manage. The camping ap, like Ranker, was very helpful. We don’t have anything to compare it with but we were very happy with the whole set up and appreciated the shuttle to and from the airport.

Maui charge a premium, they advertise their vans are under 2 years old. We booked on this basis. Our campervan unfortunatly was 2 months over the 2 years and showed its age. 94000 plus kms on the clock and a number of problems. They didnt stop our vacation but took the shine off. These issues were raised with Maui and in fairness they have accepted out complaints and promised to put things right.

Our Maui campervan was pretty much all I had expected. It was equipped as listed and we found it very much met our needs. I would have liked a more extensive briefing on its features, etc., when we picked it up. For someone like me who was not used to driving a big rig, it was a bit nerve wracking at first and there were features related to driving that we weren't sure about and just had to learn as we went. But overall, I would recommend Maui and our Ultima + 2 model.

Excellent van- we hired a fairly new one and a 6 man for two of us! So glad we did- plenty of room and bedding and reliability of new vehicle.
Had a few issues but were sorted although had to go to Queenstown- only three places you can so be aware. The only thing was the gps was not great and WiFi waste of time could only use when vehicle running as didntvhokd chsrge either which defeats the point of having one!
Easy to drive and everything you need. You don’t beef to check into powered site every two days unless you want to use all the electrical stuff if happy with free sites and free dump stations then no issue.
We bought the DOC pass and worth every penny plus liked idea of giving back as footpaths loos etc are generally fab. All but off the track but worth it and you definitely need a good map or gps to find them.
All in all a fabulous trip can’t wait to return.

Overall we were satisfied with our motor home experience despite some hiccups due to issue with the house battery.

We found out our house battery was not working on the first night of our trip. We had to drive 15km to the nearest powered site. The support team told us our battery may not have been fully charged hence we should be alright after charging it.

Unfortunately, the battery malfunctioned again on the second night. We were at the White Horse Hill campsite near Mount Aoraki. Initially we thought we could rough it out as it was pitch dark by then and we were hesitant to drive in the dark to the nearest powered camp site. We called up the help line and arranged for an inspection of the battery in Wanaka on the next day. After trying to sleep for one hour we could not bear with the cold and decided to drive to the nearest powered campsite which is fortunately 25km away. It was my first time driving in such dark condition in the middle of nowhere.

We sent the motor home to the workshop in Wanaka for inspection next afternoon and was told that the battery need to be replaced. We had to waste our previous travel time for the mechanics to look into the issue.

Fortunately there were no further problems after the 3rd day of our trip.

Have not ever dealt with a company as bad as Maui, they have the worst “customer service”, have broken down vans and are very expensive.

In my opinion they are a dinosaur company that will not last and nor should they, I had multiple problems with this company, from not paying back my deposit until I had to chase them up about it, to not returning item worth hundreds of dollars, simply telling me to “claim on my travel insurance” and that “there were signs up at the depot to check the vans” and to knowingly giving us a faulty van with a leaking toilet which was leaking waste and chemicals into the van and telling us to use our own time to take it to a repair shop to get it fixed and telling us there would be no refund or time added on to the rental to make up for lost time or if we didn’t want to do that to then just put up with it.

It is such a shame that NZ has a company like Maui running tourism as it’s such a big industry in this country and you’d hope that people traveling wouldn’t deal with Maui and look for better companies to travel with.

But don’t just take my word for it just look at all the other 1* reviews on here.

I booked a Maui motorhome precisely to ensure a trouble free holiday. Unfortunately we had several mechanical issues of engine power loss, cabin door jamming and ongoing problems with car battery life (starter battery). Generally the company were responsive, though on one occasion somewhat dismissive. They did refund $300 of the $4500 I spent - but this in no way made up for the lost time, missed opportunities, additional cost of staying in powered sites and ongoing anxiety we had throughout the trip. Unfortunately, I do believe I was unlucky as our truck only had 54,000 km on it. But I feel this is a fair review as it adequately reflects our experience. I hope it helps people reconsider whether they pay extra for 'newer' vehicles with 'better' companies.

If you are thinking of booking a Maui Motorhome (especially if through Trailfinders in the UK) take care! It wasn't until we had reached our first campsite that we realised just how filthy the motorhome was! Most of the towels were only suitable for use with a dog for muddy feet and one of the pillows was so disgusting we wouldn't even give it to a dog! When we collected the Motorhome having gone through the handover, listening carefully to the Maui rep so that we understood instructions regarding the electrics/pumps etc, we probably didn't pay a lot of attention to the general state of the van. This was a mistake, if you are collecting a Maui Motorhome as well as the standard external review, as with car hire, check the interior carefully before you leave the depot! Check the cutlery/plate drawers, cooking utensils etc. Remove the towels and bedding from the sealed plastic bags, just because they are in plastic bags does not guarantee that they are clean! Check the mattress, ours was heavily stained and covered in black hairs. We would also recommend that you check that the water tank refill hose and waste water hose is not damaged and are clean! Also ask to check that the waste water drains freely - we and a number of other travellers with Maui vans that we met all had problems with waste tanks not draining properly because of general gunge etc. Goodness knows what some folks put down their drains! If you have problems or issues ensure that you get in touch with Maui by email (evidence paper trail etc) as soon as possible, don't wait until you return the van! Also if applicable, notify whoever took your money for the booking. If it was Trailfinders (although they were great with all the other bookings on our particular trip) then the responsibility is with them in UK Law, as they took the money! Finally, if you have not yet booked consider other Motorhome providers!

We received our Maui motorhome it looked clean at first, but we found out later that when you lifted cushions or looked into drawers you saw a lot of dirt from former use, dead sandflies etc. I have taken pictures as documentation. Furthermore, the quality of our motorhome was really poor: The freshwater tank came half down because the brackets which hold it are way too weak. This is what the repair shop who repaired the motorhome even told me. The insulation against cold, heat and noise of the motorhomes is poor, too. At temperatures of +5 degrees we could only block the tightly closed windows with cushions, otherwise the wind would still push in. The gauge for fresh water and grey water did not work correctly. The office in Queenstown told me that together with the freshwater tank brackets breaking, this is a very common problem of this vehicle. Hooray! I also cannot believe that the fresh water and grey water tanks have 140/ 150 l as in the vehicle description. When I called the hotline, I was told that I only have 65 l. When I asked why the website says differently, the hotline told after 5 minutes waiting me that the tanks have 140 and 150 l. Now what do you believe? Finally, when it rains the windows don't hold tight and water keeps seeping in. This is especially aggravated by the fact that water accumulates on the roof and when you move the vehicle you get a water fall on one side. Obviously, the window can hold that amount of water even less so you get a swimming pool in your motorhome. Overall, I would not book through Maui again. In our case we paid way to much money for a poorly made motorhome.

Despite having an appointment time to pick up our motor home the pick up area was completely swamped when we arrived. . They did not have enough people working to process everyone. We waited four hours to get our motorhome, which ate up a half day of our vacation. When we went through the motorhome neither the fresh water nor the wastewater indicators were operating. This didn’t seem to be an issue for the staff.
The motorhome itself was older than anticipated and lacked basic features such as Bluetooth capability. It was well used with chipped counters, cracked stairs and not very clean.
There were also a lot of hidden expenses not included in the original quote.
We loved the freedom of having a motorhome and it was the best way to see the country. I think that there needs to be a bit more attention to detail considering these trips are often once in a lifetime.

Once booking a Maui meant quality, now that THL has taken over Maui, Britz, Mighty, et al you cannot be assured of a quality vehicle. With our Maui 4 berth (less than 2.5 year old) we encountered the following problems:
1. The fridge constantly drained power when not connected to power or on the road. It would simply stop working when freedom camping even for one night.
2. There was a foul smell coming from BEHIND the fridge that was forced through the entire van except when the fridge stopped working.
3. there were no fly screens on the windows next to the dinette behind the cab, we had to buy fly wire and tape to create a make shift solution.
4. The cord to connect to power kept shorting out on our first night and my husband had to re-wire it - it looked like some one had previously driven off without disconnecting.
5. A shelf in the fridge (again) door had obviously been repaired but mould was growing in the gap between the shelf and the door.
6. Sink in bathroom was dirty (especially around the tap)
7. Staff seem very nice but out of their depth and under-resourced.
8. The fact that there are now a number of providers advertising high quality vehicles seems to confirm my view that Maui et al (THL) are offering second rate vehicles (but not at a budget price).
9. This vehicle was supposed to be less than 2.5 years old! The age is not the issue, if it had been maintained appropriately and not been treated as a money spinner

Maui Elite Cascade campervan - it’s a 4 berth and was great for 2 people. We had another friend join half way along our trip and it was noticeably tighter and more difficult to keep clean, but sleeping arrangements were still very comfortable. Maui were very brief with their tour of the van on pick-up. We would have liked more explanation of how to use the vehicle and given a copy of theIr pre-damage assessment.

We rented the cascade for 2 people which gave us sufficient space. Had just about all we needed bar a few items. Disappointing TV could only be used for playing DVD's & radio wasn't too good. A long handled broom would have been useful for sweeping rather than just a dustpan & brush. As we were only renting for 8 days we found ourselves having to avoid using the gas as you have to return with a full bottle which as we would have used very little during such a short hire would have been quite a big extra expense.

We bought a DOC camp pass for the full 5 weeks we travelled round New Zealand all were different and all nice basic camp sites some we had to ourselves and I think the most Vans we ever had was 8. which was nice as it was quiet. the ones next to the beach were the nicest especially in the far north. It did seem that some of the scenic ones were not much better than the standard ones just in a more popular place and a few that were included in the scheme motor homes were not suitable to go there! on the access road, {maybe more of the camp sites could be included in the winter to make up for the ones closed due to flooding ect} . One of the sites we went to had not been official told of the scheme {Matata} and took our pass to contact the DOC, infact their camp sit was probably one of the best for standard we stayed at for the entire trip.
In general we had good weather despite being winter {in 5 weeks 6 days with rain of which 2 were monsoonal with thunder storms} had sun rises sun sets stars with the milky way. Went to bring back some shells, fossils, and panned gold which we have done, gold panning a wonderful waste of time - just 1 more pan!

Don't know why I had to pay nearly $300 diesel tax when we returned the vehicle when it should be paid at the bowser when we filled up?

For anyone wanting to lease a motor home from this company be warned that the pick up process is unreasonably lengthy. We arrived to pick up our rental early this morning on 10 April 2017 having pre-filled all forms online nights before in the hope of shortening this process. We had a $200 tour booked with Hobbiton at 2.10pm thinking that would be more than enough time to travel the 2hour trip in our motor home. It is now 1.10pm and we have just been called up for a preliminary presentation. I'm not sure how much longer the process will be but have had to rebook our tour twice - finally giving up and rebooking it for tomorrow. Maui are charging us a hefty daily motor home rental rate to essentially sit in their warehouse in the airport industrial estate for most of one of our precious holiday days. By the time we pick up the van we will have just enough time to drive a couple of hours out of Auckland before nightfall...having to adjust all of our planned accommodation and interisland ferry connection to fit in with this company. If I could give a zero rating I would

We had a great experience with Maui. Rented the Mercedes River 6 Berth and drove it from Queenstown to Auckland in 18 days. Worked perfect, sensitive to sidewinds, but that comes with the size. Very impressed by the roadside assistance: Had a front tire puncture on the North Island. Called the roadside assistance and withing 1 1/2 hour a nice guy had found us and changed the wheel! Of course the reaction time depends on you location and we were not in the worst spot, but still on the countryside though. Only reason for not giving a "10" is that the service in Queenstown was a little "unpersonal" when we picked up the campervan. Auckland service was spotless.

Rented in Auckland and Queenstown for 10 days each an Ultima vehicle. Queenstown service and vehicle was spotless, Auckland though with partly bad experience. First of all, the staff had this kind of "take it or leave it" attitude; quite rude, honestly. The Ultima, I rented had a worn out tire which Maui claimed to be alright. Honestly, It was finished. Maui refused to change it, as they claimed, everything is fine and the vehicle was checked and fully functionable. Well, only after heavy discussions, they finally changed the tire. Somehow, the fridge seemed not to work from the very beginning as well. First, I thought I was doing something wrong and did´t claim it, since I did´t want to be the pain in the ass ... but two days later, the fridge still was´t working. So, I had to drive back to the Auckland station to get it replaced. They did replace it, but the compensation for the loss of a precious day, they offered was ridiculous. So, first I refused their offer and only after saying, I was going to forward it to the broker, I booked with, they did a much more generous offer, which was´t great either, but I was willing to accept. So far, in the end at least everything was fine, but it leaves a bit of a bad aftertaste ... that´s the reason for the only seven points.

The camper was well equipped with everything we needed. Staff at check-in and check-out in Christchurch was very friendly and helpful. We bought extra data for internet, which was a regret, because there was no reception in most places and often no internet if there was mobile coverage. We loved our Maui motorhome that we rented for four weeks from December to January. We collected in Christchurch, staff were very friendly and gave us all the information we needed, everything went very smoothly and we were soon on our way. We didn't have any problems with the motorhome, everything worked well. Only thing that was missing was a tin opener! The drop off was much easier than expected, I would recommend taking the Express Drop, if you're going to do a lot of miles it will save you on diesel tax. The only disappointment with this rental was the linen and towels smelt of stale sweat, when we came to opening them up. I'm sure they'd been washed but not well enough, or maybe they weren't dry when they'd been wrapped in plastic. I would recommend taking them out of the plastic covering whilst the Maui assistant is still with you and asking for a replacement if they do not smell fresh. Unfortunately, we had driven 5 hours away before we opened them up and I spent a lot of time in the laundry washing and drying them as we couldn't have slept in them. That is the only reason my review isn't a 10.

- The good:
- Easy pickup and return, with shuttle to/from airport (although this is not really necessary if you can walk
for 10 minutes with your bags)
- Well presented/clean van on pickup
- No issues with van during our trip, so I can't comment on staff support during the hire
- Friendly and helpful staff during check-in and drop-off
- Although a bit of a squeeze, the shower in the River van is very useful and the toilet comes in handy too. With three grown-up males, I was dumping the toilet and sink waste every two days. The water is heated electrically in this van, so you need to have been plugged into a powered site recently to get hot water
- There is a diesel-powered heater that is quite quiet and this came in handy a couple of times
- This van has a powerful Mercedes diesel engine that is very capable - there were no issues going up hills
- Do the "dump" was actually a bit of a breeze, much easier than I expected
- The Bad:
- Hiring one of these motorhomes is super expensive on a daily rate, so it's kind of a one time experience. Saying that I had to hire a six berth, because of taking two grown up boys with me (i.e. three beds). I would say that the six berth would be great for two couples sharing the cost. It would be nice if Maui offered a "per person" rate in combination with the van, but I guess they don't have to
- I know these hire companies are in the business of making money but pushing the extra liability insurance somehow taints the experience for me. I guess most people pay up because they don't have enough spare credit on their card and that's probably why Maui make the pre-allocated deposit so high ($7500). It's a good way to coerce people into paying for the extra insurance. That said, the staff in Queenstown weren't too pushy about it
- Also, the "easy return" option is just more cash wasted unless you are just super lazy or hopeless at timing your return flight.

We had a 6 berth motorhome and we travelled over 2000 kms in 10 days. While the driver and front passenger can see (have unobstructed views of scenery), people sitting in the rear - in very uncomfortable bench seats - have very obstructed views. In fact, you can not see anything. If you are a child, it is even worse. These seats are around the table have no support and are very uncomfortable. We had no idea that only people in the front of the van would be able to see. Apart from that, the van was reliable. It was tidy but not really clean on pick up ie: we found used tissues in the door and a used water bottle and dirty socks under the seat. It was well equipped but the radio /dvd player didnt work. Some of the cupboards needed fixing. Everything else - ie: hot water/toilet, worked well and we had no problems with that. People also need to realise that the beds are very small, so if you are a bigger person, it may not be very comfortable for you.

We had a truly great holiday in a Maui River with two young children for 2 months. Vehicle was the perfect size for a family of 4, and it's great to travel round NZ by campervan.

However, Maui markets themselves as a premium operator, but the pre-departure vehicle checks they do are anything but premium, hence the poor rating. I get the impression from reading other reviews on the Maui website that you can be lucky or very unlucky with the campervan condition.

We were initially given a brand new vehicle which was in great condition but the engine broke down. Not Maui's fault: just unlucky. But the replacement vehicle, delivered to us in a campground, was in shocking condition. It took us a full day at the mechanic to get it into a functioning condition, with usable table and working cabin door, and we had multiple further mechanic visits. The rear window was not watertight. One tyre was so worn it was not in legal condition and was seriously underinflated. One side light was not screwed in and was hanging down on a wire. The vehicle registration had expired. Etc etc etc. In other words, Maui supplied a campervan which was not watertight, not in roadworthy condition, not properly licensed and with multiple serious defects with the cabin equipment.

On the positive side, THL's on road team were excellent, but no renter should have to spend excessive amounts of time at mechanics just because the vehicle wasn't checked out prior to rental.

Vehicle pickup in Auckland was very fast and efficient, despite the branch being very busy. But much of the information we were given by the staff was simply wrong, and several pieces of equipment we had paid for were missing (e.g. GPS). We were also given a child seat which was missing a part. I would recommend to future renters that you read beforehand exactly what is and is not included as part of the rental, and make sure that it is in the van. Check the function of every single thing.

We originally booked with United Campervans but they have now merged with Maui. This was our first time in a camper, and we enjoyed the experience very much. We traveled around the South Island, and the camper proved to be a really flexible and enjoyable way to see what a stunning place it is. The amazing lack of traffic on most roads meant we were able to make great time as we traveled around - the main source of delay being our need to stop and look at the amazing views seemingly around every corner! Overall, I would recommend a camper to anyone looking for a way to travel in New Zealand in a heartbeat.
We did however experience a few wrinkles:
- We chose United as their on-line material offered vans with three front seats: there being three in our party, this was important to us. We turned up only to be presented with a Maui van with two front seats, and only to be told that 3-seaters had not been available for some years. This was very disappointing - it meant that one person always had to be in the back, where the view is nowhere near as good and it is extremely noisy when driving.
-The main double bed was big enough but the mattress was very thin and lumpy, and so, not especially comfortable. No-one really expects a hotel bed, but it should be possible to do better than this.
-There was a bit of a slip up in the pre-rental checks as the grey-water waste tank was not emptied. The first time we realized this was when waste water appeared in the shower after a day or so! Easy enough to fix but it should never have been an issue.
-The latch on the outer door to the gas bottle was broken and it repeatedly swung open as we drove.
-Some of the drawer and cupboard latches didn't hold when we were driving.
I recommend the experience as a whole, without reservation. We genuinely had the vacation of a lifetime. However, Maui need to look at their on-line material and fix the quality issues that we experienced.

We did a right choice by renting Maui Motorhomes for our group holiday in NZ. I want to congratulate the staffs for their great job from we take the motorhomes, until we returned the vehicle. The processes are amazingly quick and the conditions of the vehicles also great that we don't experience any breakdown or difficulty during our journey. That's make our journey smooth and exciting.

Maui Motor Home was excellent, no issues, everything was included in the price - We paid the extra to cover all insurance for peice of mind and the price was still resonable in comparision to hotel and car hire. We travelled with our 2 children and also friends who had their own van . Great to drive ..Clean comfortable with eveything we needed , easy check in and express check out .. Would use again

My wife Linda and I have spent the past 27 nights in a six-berth Maui Platinum River and we have just 3 more nights to endure in this dreadful vehicle.

We booked a four-berth Maui Platinum Beach, but THL, who own and operate the Maui brand, allocated us a six-berth. We tried for 9 days to get this corrected, but gave up - Hilary (Team Leader) consistently failed to call back.

Motorhome rental in NZ is very expensive; including excess insurance, site fees, WiFi fees and other add-ons we are paying $400 a day (excluding fuel) to live in a cramped and poorly designed box, sharing toilets and showers with other campers. The alternative car/motel option would have been half the price, with a far superior outcome.

Our gripes about the six-berth Maui Platinum River include:
- six berths and six seat belts, but no living or storage space;
- central corridor is just 41cm (16 inches) wide making it impossible to pass anybody standing at the sink or hob;
- the toilet and shower are combined; run the shower and soak the toilet;
- use the shower and quickly empty the fresh and fill the grey water, which means a trip to the dump site;
- the beds are impossible to make, you have kneel on the bed, but cannot then raise the mattress to tuck in the sheets;
- the radio/CD in the drivers cab has no AUX input.

And there are just two of us in the vehicle. It must be hell for four or six people.

In summary, do the sums; motorhomes are the high cost, low outcome option in NZ. If you still decide to go down this route choose a decent rental company. THL is not such a company.

I would be surprised if our experience is unique as 80% of the large Maui vans that we have seen on the roads have been six-berths; I suspect that many people order four-berths but end up with six-berths.

THL also own and operate the KEA, Britz, Alpha, Mighty and United brands. Maui is described as their premium brand, so I can only speculate how they treat the customers of the other brands.

Within 2hrs of starting our Maui van touring we were stuck with a van travelling at 5 Ks per hour. We rang Maui who said they will send someone out to us. Good a mechanic we thought, but no, a tow truck was sent. He had been told to take us back to where we had picked up our van, when we baulked at going all the way back it was decided to take us to the nearest Mercedes service dealer. This was after 2 hours and still no phone call from Maui to tell us what was going on or perhaps a sorry! After cooling our heels for ages we were told by Mercedes that they can't fix the problem and that Maui were finally going to send another van for us. When we passed the place that we had broken down at later that day, we had wasted 5 hours on a fiasco that should have been handled way better than that by Maui. From our first phone call Maui should have sent another van straight away, got us moving again then worried about towing their van. We were compensated with a days hire, but sometimes it NOT about the money. We were on holiday and lost 5 hours of seeing beautiful New Zealand. Maui gave us the impression that they are too big and don't really care if we don't hire another van from them as there are plenty more tourists coming. Unfortunately they seem to have the monopoly on larger vans, but if you find a smaller van hire company go with them, we will be.

I would challenge the designer of the premier 4 berth to make 2 singles or a double bed that two people can fit on. Bed cushions overhang the bed boards and one is short to allow toilet door to open. Also wardrobe shortens bed so it is not long enough for an adult at that side. Service on collection was good, but - no awing - original van ordered had an awning - substitute umbrella was incomplete and impossible to use - a very poor substitute indeed.
Having now spent over 4 weeks in this campervan - sleeping diagonally across the bed is no fun - the alternative is to have my feet overhanging the end of the cushions. I only have to survive another 10 nights before I can look forward to a 'proper bed'.

Update -- after several emails and sending photographs Maui seem to think that a $290 discount is compensation for 6 weeks of discomfort due to the terrible bed design - I do not . Once you have left the country they can fob you off with anything as you cannot complain in person - the supervisor in Auckland did her job well by sending me away with an email address rather than settling the complaint at the time - it was too near home time.

NZ was a great holiday - but Maui have no sense of customer relations or customer satisfaction.

Lovely new motorhome (Platinum Beach), spotless condition. Picked up from Wellington which cost us an extra $90 a day compared to picking up from other locations. Unfortunately we found that out after having paid our deposit. There were a few minor problems with it. Electric step wasn't working. Noticed at pick up time but the young man couldn't get it to work so we took it anyway as we wanted to get going. It was a bit of a nuisance to have to jump down all the time. Door was hard to open. Light in shower/toilet didn't work at all. When the reading light near the bed was turned on it was blowing the lights fuse. Maui staff were really good when we contacted them about the issue and directed us to the nearest place where we could get it fixed but we purchased a packet of fuses and changed it and didn't use that particular light as it was an ongoing problem. Perhaps leaving a packet of fuses in the vehicle might be a good idea. Window in the bed area above the cab leaked when it rained. I would hate to hire an older vehicle! Drop off was smooth. We reported all the issues so we hope they fixed them. I don't like the fact that they charge your credit card for the bond. Not only does your bank charge you for foreign currency conversion but Maui charge a credit card fee on the amount as well. I think it should just be an imprint only with a transaction taking place if there's a need. This was our first time hiring a motor home so we now know what to look out for.

We no longer offer Wellington as a collection or return point, and our larger Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown branches are better equipped to recognize and repair any issues before our homes are given to our customers. In regards to the bond, an imprint does not give us any security and a hold will only last for a certain time dictated by your credit card provider hence we do debit the vehicle security bond for the Standard Liability and Liability Reduction Option One. The Credit Card surcharge that is charged when the bond is debited is also refunded on Visa and MasterCard bond payments.

had a Maui Motorhome last year. and for that 3weeks trip overall is ok i would rank 7 out of 10.
our maui have some problems. and after 2days the water heating system not funtion and we had a ferry booking to southisland so they send us to some workshop to have a quick look. i was told it not able to be fixed. so they have to send another muri motohome to swap it . second motorhome without gas heating(only can heat back cabin by main power) so it is very cold at night if u stay without main power. and then the 12v charge not working at lake takapo again they send us to local workshop and it get fixed. so we waste lots time on these things, anyway they have a good reponse on every problem we had. when we swap the motorhome we left some personal stuff on the old motorhome. when we back to auckland , they already wait us at their site! How great the service is! Thank you so much. we had a happy ending.

by the way we had a backpacker motorhome this year, and feel maui is expensive not worth at much.same model(4berth),maui only have a gas back cabin heating which backpacker don't have ( second maui they give us doesn't have it either.) the only difference is maui motorhome almost brandnew.

Well it seems that someone sent out 5 copies of the insurance documents dealing with cars not campervans. We get there and they want $7500.00 each van $37,500.00 or we have to pay them for additional insurance at their rates ($30 or $60 per day x21 days) We paid the additional insurance and a reduced deposit on the vans $374.85 insurance and $2500.00 deposit each campervan. 2 of the units inside drawers let go! Also one of the units lets diesel heater exhaust into the sleeping compartment, another the toilet cartridge was not emptied, and one didn't have much water. One of the units had electric problems so on the 3rd night there was no heat, Our safe stops working after we put stuff in it! Well then one of the girls accidentally puts gas into the Diesel someone stopped her before she finished! So we don't start it and call Maui. They send out a tow truck thats too small.(charged $90 to credit card) but he has to call another tow truck that is large enough( this one wants $220.00 on top of the first $90 we ended up paying him $140 cash and he knows someone who can fix it in a couple hours)The driver winches the campervan on to his flatbed. Later we hear from the Tow truck driver that it has to be done at the Mercedes dealership who is closed till Monday.Monday at 11 AM I drop in and the dealer gives us the keys ($391.00 later) . We get about 2.5 hours out and the ladies van dies. They tow the unit to a garage. Maui sends a man out from Auckland and he will be there at 8 or 9 pm. William from Maui pulls up about 10pm but he needs to fill up and he tells me I will be paying for his gas! Arrive at Wellington at 3AM they have a new campervan waiting, but its a stick! I walk around it in the dark and find a panel cracked and loose and mark it down(thank goodness). We get to Christchurch and notice the cracked panel is almost all gone! They are still holding on to $2550NZ$ for another small crack in someones bumper.

Renting a Maui Campervan for the weekend was a great experience.

I arrived early to get the best time for customer service at the Auckland branch, and all aspects of the contract were explained clearly and easy to understand. We rushed through the process to get going quicker, and this was ok as a DVD show through was provided in the van.

We were given a Mercedes 6 berth with only 14,000kms on it and in new condition. It was wonderfull to drive with more than enough power to get up the hills, and I felt that the van was superior to most other transport on the road. All linen, crockery and utensils were provided in the van, so all we had to do was buy DVDs, food and pack our clothing. The only difficult part was negotiating round abouts, however I drove slowly and focused more on the driving experience.

Returning the van was easy, with a simple check in, and pleasant customer service. Even though the van mirror was damaged at the Camp ground, I was covered by the insurance and I did not need to pay extra.

I would recommend Maui Campervans, and we are planning our next trip soon.

Update

I now have rented 4 Maui vans and the Ultimate Plus is the best. The iPhone integration and tomtom Gps were great. The layout is good for extra room, and the van was well equiped. The updated Mercedes van is economical and quiet at 9.5L/100kms and easy to drive. Would recommend to all people wanting to do a road trip. But to the doubters, I would say that you should check everything first before leaving the branch. If anything does go wrong then you should call the on road assist and they will help. Plus the branch staff in Christchurch were lovely.

I could say more and will for my next trip.

Not very happy - the brochure stated automatic vans guaranteed and we got a manual. Also an older van than expected. Would go slightly bigger next time.

The van has been fine but the service hasn't been so good. We spent a lot of extra time waiting to pick it up and still things weren't ready.

Unfortunately we wasted half a day as the van wasn't ready to pick up as we had been advised it would be. But the facilities inside are good and we like that they have thought of some little things, like towels.

The bedding has been basic but adequate. We had to buy another blanket when we were down south, and pillows as the ones provided are very thin. The van handles well and drives like a dream.

Van itself is alright though I don't think it was checked out well. There is a curtain missing, a chair is well broken and we don't think the waste water was cleaned out properly - and it comes up through the shower.

Very compact, but it is a 3 berth. Goes alright and everything was clean. We were a bit concerned about having to pay extra insurance unexpectedly - hefty fees.

The service of the company has been great and I would give them a 10. But the vehicle has had problems: waste issues, bald tyres etc. It is very mediocre and not what we expected for our money.

Have got a small baby, so a campervan is really convenient. Van is equipped well, but they were a bit inefficient when we arrived and a chair was broken.

Although it drove OK we had some concerns with the van. The biggest was that we were sent out with brake lights, reversing lights and a rear indicator not working, which we didn't find out for a couple of days. There could have been better use of space; cupboard space was very limited; we noticed better design in similar vans. Our experience was good service both when picking up and returning the van!
