The Glacier Hikes Are the Real Deal Here

Franz is my pick over Fox Glacier when it comes to free glacier viewpoint hikes, and it's not particularly close. The Roberts Point Track is the one to do if you've got the legs for it. It starts gently enough, with Pete's Pool about 10 minutes from the carpark, a proper little mirror lake that earns an early start all on its own. Then past the big swingbridge and the track changes gear completely. Steep, slippery in places, more swingbridges, a hanging bridge that'll get your attention, and then a viewpoint that gets you genuinely close to the glacier. Really worth it. The Alex Knob Track is the other option, a solid grunt up the mountainside with good glacier views, just a bit less varied and interesting if you're asking me.

It's Retreating Fast

I'll be straight about it. The glacier isn't what it once was. But there's still a section that pushes down into the rainforest, and that combination of ice and green is genuinely something special. I don't know how many more years that'll be the case, so if you've been sitting on the fence about a scenic flight or a heli-hike, this is probably the time. The RANKERS promo code gets you a discount on both if you're booking from here. The flight here is about steep dramatic peaks in tight confines, very different from Mt Cook. Just don't lock in the booking too early. Weather rules everything and you want a clear day.

Views and Timing

Mountain tops here tend to stay clear until late morning, then the heat thermals build cloud around the peaks through the middle of the day. Late afternoon it often clears again. Early starts pay off, whether that's a hike or a hot tub soak with a glacier view. The RANKERS promo code covers that too, which takes the edge off nicely after a big day on the tracks. Food in town is fine but nothing I've found has blown me away yet, so if you've got a recommendation, I'm genuinely keen to hear it.
