Freedom camping within Motupipi Car Park is restricted to certified self contained vehicles only.
Self contained vehicles must park in the designated area as indicated in yellow on the map.
Vehicles must leave by 7.00 am every morning.
A safe distance of at least two metres must be maintained between vehicles.
One of the few legal overnight stay options in the Golden Bay area.
Freedom Camping in Golden Bay has become very popular and many free sites are regularly full. Be prepared to stay in a local Holiday Park or DOC campsite, which generally have more space. Thanks and respect from Rankers and the local Golden Bay rangers :)

It’s a car Park in the very center of Takaka.
No services it is just to park for the night but it is convenient since it is the only free camp. There are public toilets and even a DOC WiFi a few meters away in the Main Street.

An overnight carpark between the backs of several buildings.
A line of only 10 designated places which got full quickly, so a lot of vans came and parked on the second line. The toilet is a 2 min walk across the central street. We got up and left at 7 AM, but most of the vans stayed there.

The only free site in the Takaka area.
It's a public carpark just off the main street. Easy access to this funky and friendly town. Otherwise an uninspiring overnight stay.

Is just a basic car park with toilets a three minute walk away by the bank.
A ranger came around 7:15 making sure that everyone was gone.

It’s an ‘it’ll do’ stay for sure, considering the options are very limited in the area but being central Takaka is grand.
& the fact it’s just a free car park you can use it to explore during the day

A little bit weird place in the middle of the carpark, but it was calm to stay there.
Toilets (24/7) nearby in the park next to the old building of bank. And the best fish and chips we’ve ever had on NZ just around the corner!

If nobody is coming in the night to damage your car it might be ok. But for us and our neighbors it was happening that we had a flat tire in the morning. Someone came in the night and were putting stones in the cap of the Ventile for the tire, so that the tire lost air.

There is also a public restroom across the street at the public library

It's in the carpark in the back of the shops.
It's a bit hard to tell where it is permissible to park. Definitely feels safe. I had dinner at Dangerous Kitchen which was great and went to the local movie theatre. Very comfy chairs. There r toilets and shower and dump station next to info centre. Nice town.

Good for a one night stay. The marked area is probably too small for large vehicles.
