Sullivans Bay campsite is the only vehicle based campground in the beautiful Mahurangi Regional Park and is very popular so book ahead.
Camping is along the beachfront on a large grassy area, with some large trees to shelter under. There is easy access to sea kayaking along the sheltered bays and heaps of walking opportunities to the lookout and other camping sites.

Very nice place to kayak and fish. How ever, my husband and I found the volunteer based in this camp ground very invasive. The toilet were disgusting and the caravan camp site had beer lid and other rubbishes on the ground. The rubbish smell horrible. Campervan were parked all over the place and some kept the light all night which was annoying.

Shhhhshhhhh - Don't tell everyone.....
This Auckland Council site is similar to DOC sites, but does have flushing toilets, and is within a 90 minute drive of Auckland airport!
As a first site on a trip North, you'll not find much better. We Love It and always have our first night in a van here.
Each camping location is approved by a regional council in NZ. So if it shows on the map, you’re allowed to stay.

Lovely spot. Definitely recommend. Clean toilet facilities. Friendly grounds manager. No showers unfortunately.
Beautiful beaches and cliff side rocks to walk across. The place itself is very well taken care of. Compost bins. Recycling and garbage - which is what a lot of campsites actually lack in New Zealand.
Plenty of shaded area if you are staying in a tent like we did.
Clean drinking water no need to boil before hand.
Gates close at 9pm for entrance to the park so whatever you do be there before 9.

Good spot right on the beach. Only about 8 spots for self contained campers and then a bigger area beside for camping. Very busy beach on the weekends. Awesome views of the surrounding bays. Plenty of oysters and a few mussels out towards the point. You can walk across to the island at low tide too. Nice beach for little kids but not white sand.

Nice place, very small beach on high tide (about a metre), not very crowded, good facilities, nice starry sky.

We spent the first night in NZ here, and it is still one of my favourites, beautiful scenery and a wonderful landscape on the way in.
