Information

Smiths Farm Holiday Park

A boutique style holiday park centrally located in the Marlborough Sounds.

Smiths Farm was developed in 1997 by Chris and Barbara Faulls. Situated on Barbara's family farm, guests can relax and soak up the sights and sounds of paradise or opt to explore the wonderful local area.

Wander through the farm to the bush walk that leads you to a big waterfall. Try our night time adventure and visit the glow worms in their magical dell. Feed the pet animals and just enjoy being in the country in a unique part of NZ.

Just 3km away at Anakiwa is the start of the Queen Charlotte Track. Talk to Chris and Barbara about options for walking, mountain biking or kayaking on the Queen Charlotte Track or in the Queen Charlotte Sound itself.

Take a mail boat cruise, hop on a scenic cruise or a mussel cruise or pilot your own boat at your leisure.

The Waikakaho Walkway is also just a few kilometres away and you can explore the old goldmining area of Cullensville.

If that doesn't take your fancy, then drive the 40minutes to Blenheim and either self drive around the many vineyards and attractions or hop onboard a guided tour. Sample some of the amazing fresh food at the many excellent restaurants and cafes or visit the Saturday artisan's market or the Farmers market on Sunday.

  • It’s a nice and peaceful campground, good for families.

There was just one thing we found very irritating and not peaceful at all: there was a sheep tied to a little cage in the garden for the guests to pet and feed. There were kids chasing it around and the sheep seemed to be very stressed out and scared of humans in general. We think it’s very cruel to have a sheep live like that for the guests amusement.

There definitely need to be rules for supervising kids around the animals!

  • Quiet farm for camping of all types on the private farm of the family in a valley between mountains.

Clean Facilities and warm muffins as a welcome gift and some food to feed the sheep and goats. 30 minute walk to a waterfall (with glowworms at night).

Check out by 10:30 AM. Loved our stay!

  • We had an early morning ferry to catch in Picton.

This camping ground is less than an hour's drive away from the ferry terminal so, for us, was a convenient stop.

We were welcomed with fresh muffins and overfed farm animals. Turned out to be a relaxing environment. We had a small cabin with access to the shared facilities. Everything was clean and well thought out.

The only issue was that the cabin had no ventilation unless a door or window was opened. And these had no insect screens. Otherwise a great accommodation.

  • Friendly and helpful welcome, with lots of information.

The lady booked our kayaking trip for us. Powered pitches quite small. But the real complaint was with the facilities. For toilets: 1 male, 1 female, 1 disabled and 1 urinal. This was a big campsite and we quite often had to wait for a free toilet. Showers were similarly inadequate. There were no separate wash basins, so people were cleanng their teeth in the laundry sinks. With a second shower block this site would be transformed, as there were a large number of tent users who really needed good facilities.

Hi Alan, We are disappointed that you did not come and talk to us before posting your comments. Our powered sites are actually above the average size in NZ. We are not a big park: we believe we are actually the smallest holiday park or campsite by allowed number of guests and powered/tent sites in NZ. We limit our numbers to 80 people at any one time (and our motels and self contained Units have their own showers, toilets, kitchens, etc). Yes, we only have one access unisex facility, one female toilet, one male toilet and one urinal. We have the correct amount for our allowed guests on tent sites. As for the sinks in the laundry area, they are for brushing your teeth in. There is one main laundry sink which is right next to the washing machine, the other two sinks are for face washing and teeth brushing. There are also sinks in the toilet areas which people use to brush their teeth. We are a small privately owned park: we are not some big chain park and make no claim to be one. Those people preferring lots of showers and toilets can also expect lots of other people, i.e big parks= big amounts of people: this won't ever be happening here as we prefer to stay small and personal so that we can continue to give a friendly and helpful service. When the park is full, we stay up often until midnight each night to ensure that the facilities are kept in a clean and hygienic manner.

I was given a very nice warm muffin on arrival and food to feed the sheep, goat and pigs. There is also a very friendly hen wandering around. Very clean and the staff, Chris and Barbara are lovely to deal with. Barbara deduced that I was a gardener and brought me over a vase of flowers from her garden - a wonderful gesture and very much appreciated. I have very much enjoyed my stay and met very pleasant travellers from the US, France and Germany. Thank you, Chris and Barbara for a wonderful start to my trip.

  • We have already been to many campsites in New Zealand, this one is definitely one of the best, and a stay here is highly recommended!

The place is particularly suitable for families, there are some animals that you can feed, you get some food when you check-in (apart from the delicious muffins). Barbara and Chris are very warm hosts, always available if you have a question or concern. It's their hospitality that makes the place special. The facilities are clean and ever works as it should. Apart from the animals there is a small playground. The campsite is very conveniently located for cycling tours or simply for a stop between Picton and Nelson. We've already been here twice and will definitely come back!

  • Just confirming what other people said about this great campsite and the owners.

    In addition:

+ Do not miss the waterfall and the worms. For somebody who hadn't witnessed this before, it was an unforgettable experience.

+ On my own in July

/!\ the owners took the pain to carefully mark the path with reflectant material, and even to equippe parts with a rope, but obviously don't expect the classic DOC gravel/board trail! Hiking shoes quite important if wet and a torch light absolutely essential

    - The road is quite close (but not much traffic)

  • I went here due to the road up to Mistletoe Bay being shut down due to severe damage.

Glad I did! The folks running the place were so friendly and helpful. Facilities super clean and plenty of toilets and shower. The glow worm hike was incredibly cool and I was happy to make some friends while wandering around in the dark forest (definitely a better experience with some company). Highly recommend.
