Auckland Museum is the kind of place that takes you by surprise. The building itself is stunning, and inside you've got Maori and Pacific collections that some travellers reckon sit alongside or even above what you'll find at Te Papa. The natural history section is a highlight too, particularly the New Zealand birds. Military history, volcanic geology, the lot. It's genuinely broad.

The price trips people up a bit, and it's fair to flag that. Locals get in free, but visitors pay around $25-30. That said, the consistent view across hundreds of travellers is that it earns its keep. Give yourself a proper half day at minimum. People regularly note that a full day still isn't enough to cover everything.

If the Maori cultural show is running during your visit, it's worth checking whether it's included or costs extra before you commit. The main collection is the real drawcard anyway.

Promo code RANKERS gets you 10% off, which takes a little of the sting out of the entry price. Helps keep us going too.

  • I loved the natural history portion, particularly the exhibits on New Zealand's birds.

Price was a little steep at $25 for foreigners.

  • Very interesting exhibit on Maori and Pacific Island culture.

Only improvement would be less resource devoted to toys from the 1980s - I do not need a museum for that.

  • $25 entrance fee is quite expensive, if you can choose to go to Te Papa in Wellington, which is a lot better.

OK activity for a rainy day in Auckland. It is not very interesting.

  • Interesting exhibits, but a lot of them in bad condition.

A positive was the Maori dancing. A negative that it is expensive, we found the same exhibits in Wellington for free.

Sadly, the rest is not that good, and it costs money to enter for non-Aucklanders.
