Expect no facilities. Generally for self contained vehicles only.
A few unprepared freedom campers have affected Aotearoa, socially and environmentally. New Zealanders are very aware of this, and some now see freedom campers as a threat to the environment and our collective ability to enjoy it.
We don’t want you to be seen in this light. Please be respectful of the environment and the local people. These freedom camping tips will show the way.
Freedom camping in New Zealand is genuinely one of the great campervan perks. You're parked up at a lakefront, a beachfront, or the foot of the Alps, paying nothing, watching the sun go down over water that looks like it's been colour-corrected. Lake Pukaki in the Mackenzie is a classic example - it has no right to be free, but it is. The West Coast delivers too, with beachfront spots near Punakaiki where you can light a driftwood fire and watch Westland Petrels circle in at dusk. Down in Southland, Monkey Island is a big, exposed site - sea lions and dolphins from the beach, windy as anything in a nor'wester. These places fill up fast in summer, so arriving early isn't optional, it's just how it works.

Not everywhere plays ball. Around Queenstown central, forget it - locals aren't keen and the bylaw situation is messy enough that it's not worth the grief. The better move is Lowburn Harbour on the way to Wanaka, or Kingston Lake south of town (brilliant location, sardines-in-a-can busy). Over in Marlborough, Wairau Diversion near Blenheim is the standout free spot in the region - fishing at dusk, mountain views when it's clear, wine tour pickups available. Most freedom camping is self-contained vehicles only, so check before you show up. If you're up in the Rotorua area, there's freedom camping near Reporoa where the promo code RANKERS gets you a discount - handy when you're already saving on accommodation.
The whole point of freedom camping is that the location does the work. No facilities, no powered sites, no camp kitchen - but often the kind of view that a five-star lodge would charge seriously for. Okarito on the West Coast is a good example: few people, mountain views, two minutes to the beach. Same idea at Glenorchy at the head of Lake Wakatipu, or the coastal spots around Kaikoura and Otago. Arrive early, leave it tidy, and you'll find NZ's freedom camping network genuinely hard to beat.
