South Island ▷ Nelson Region ▷
Abel Tasman gets busy, but the basic campsites up at the northern end of the park are genuinely quieter because most people don't make the effort to get there. Totaranui, Anapai Bay, and Mutton Cove are my pick for that reason alone. Harder to reach means fewer people. Down the southern end, Tinline is a good shout for families, especially at high tide when the beach swim is on.
Outside of Abel Tasman, Kina Beach just south of Motueka is a solid and laid-back option. Views are good and there's a golf course nearby if that's your thing. Around Motueka you'll also find spots like Hidden Valley Farm worth a look if you want something a bit off the main drag.
Timing matters here. The peak NZ holiday window from late December to mid-January is full-on across the region, especially in and around Abel Tasman. Go either side of that if you can. And stock up on food in Motueka before heading anywhere further west - options get slim and pricey once you're past there.
