Abel Tasman Kayaks is the original sea kayak operator in the park, and that local knowledge counts for a lot out there. Whether you go guided or freedom hire, the gear is solid and the beaches you can access from the water are something else. Seals, penguins, sea lions, tucked-away coves you'd never find on foot. It's a genuinely good way to see the park.
For the guided kayak and walk combo, know going in that the paddling is harder than it looks, especially if you haven't been in a kayak before. Three hours on the water will work you a bit. The walk back through the national park is well worth it though. For freedom hirers, the safety briefing and gear fitting takes a couple of hours, so factor that into your day. My pick is getting on the water as early as possible. The park is at its best in the morning and you'll have more of it to yourself. First you kayak for about three hours along beautiful beaches and stop wherever you want.
At Anchorage you leave the kayaks at the beach and walk part of the great walk back. Very beautiful, but a lot harder than you think in the beginning.

The three hour kayaking tour is really hard if you are untrained.
But the beautiful beaches of Abel Tasman make the paddling worthwhile. The walk back was also really awesome.

We arrived at 8am to enquire about freedom kayak hires for the same day.
Without hassle, we were trained and tested on our kayak rescue skills and by 9:30am we were on the water to explore. Easy pickup and dropoff on the beach!

The trip itself was wonderful! The people of the organisation were a bit impersonal and our water taxi was not arranged. But the facilities were nice, the showers etc.

Perfect day with a nice guide to hidden places along the coast.
We saw a lot of animals like sea lions and penguins.

It was great and the prices not too expensive.
Guide told us everything about information of safety. They are super nice and the kayak course is perfect for looking around the Abel Tasman area.
