South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷
Marlborough is a proper South Island gateway, and where you base yourself matters a lot. If you're rolling in or out on the ferry, the options on Waikawa Road near the marina are my pick over staying right in Picton town. Much quieter, and Waikawa Bay is genuinely beautiful. For wine country, Spring Creek Holiday Park is the standout full-facility spot. It sits next to a crystal-clear spring-fed river with tame eels, which is a bit of a bonus nobody expects.
If you're driving through to Nelson, Pelorus Bridge Campsite is worth a night if you can time it outside the NZ holiday rush. In peak season it gets really busy. But shoulder season? Lush riverside camping under big kahikatea trees, aqua-coloured water, good swimming. Hard to beat for a stopover.
One thing worth checking before you book in the Blenheim area is whether your campsite gets pickup from the wine tour operators. Several spots around Blenheim do, which makes the whole wine day much easier. Whites Bay is beautiful but sits outside most tour routes, so if that's on your agenda, plan accordingly.
