Omaka is genuinely one of the better museum experiences in the South Island. The WW1 collection is the real centrepiece, and the dioramas built by Weta Workshop are something else. It's not just planes behind glass. The scenes are theatrical and detailed, and the stories behind the aircraft are what make it stick with you.
The guided tour is worth doing. The guides here clearly know their stuff and care about the place. A few reviewers have flagged that it's on the pricier side, and that's fair, but the quality of the displays justifies it for anyone with even a passing interest in aviation history. Allow a good couple of hours, maybe more.
My one practical tip: ask for a torch so you can properly read the exhibit notes. Small thing, makes a difference. Promo code RANKERS gets you 10% off, which takes a little of the sting out of the entry price.
