Hawdon Shelter Campsite
Great place very spacious, but can be crowded in times.
We had it once all for ourselves and once there was a bootcamp of the NZ army, the guys were jogging early morning and the Officer was shouting very loud "Everybody silent! People are sleeping"
Very nice people though. Watch out for the rough road, we got a big rock stuck between the back double-tires, long rough roads harbour this risk and then you get stuck.

Ok for lunch, but not special to stay.

If you've seen this you never want to go to an ordinary camping ground again!
Nice well kept meadow, nice secluded bay, easy acces to beach, good facilities.

Good place a little tight though, good access to the lake.
Nice mirror effect similar to Lake Matheson early morning.

Not to be missed, must be completely independent though.
If you are lucky you have marvellous views there.

We don't share the view of some enthusiastic comments before.
If you like NZ don't go there. Showers may be cheap, but in general a very grubby situation on the edge of a cricket field, VERY noisy, no privacy, no atmosphere and very unfriendly caretakers.
There are few places in this area, I would for sure not choose this one.

Great place, very spacious, many opportunities to find a place.
A new toilet block will be ready soon and replace the toilet boxes.

Great place, only friendly gold diggers around.
Good start for moonlight track
ATTENTION warning sign gravel road is not maintained by the council 4wheel drive highly recommended. If you get stuck you are 20 km from the main road and no telephone signal and hardly anyone around to give a hand.
