North Island ▷ Taranaki ▷ New Plymouth ▷
Beautiful spot, clearly very popular with campers, toilets in a poor state maybe due to there being no lights so when you go in in the morning it's a terrible mess.
Beautiful site though. No potable water though that we could find.

Beautiful site, we didn't feel super safe there at night, facilities quite dirty also, but it was rainy day so expected.
Beautiful lake though maybe we were just unlucky with our experience as it was also the weekend.
North Island ▷ Ruapehu ▷ Tongariro / National Park Village ▷
Very beautiful location beneath the mountains, great view for sunrise if you are lucky not to have too many clouds.
Great campsite, all the facilities you need, and can pay with penny card (can buy from foursquare up the road as you enter by the gas station)
We loved it here, it's reasonably priced, power, laundry, washing up sinks, clean water and hot showers and toilets available.
North Island ▷ Waikato ▷ Otorohanga ▷
Fine place to spend the night, cheaper than some of the other places on the way to Waitomo glow worm caves etc.
12$ per person per night, facilities are clean there are hot showers and toilets, there is also fresh water, but not many spaces so may need to book in busy season. There is a cafe attached but didn't visit it as we're just driving through and needed somewhere to sleep.
North Island ▷ Taranaki ▷ New Plymouth ▷
Great spot, lots of surfers and fishing happening, quiet at night when we stayed on a Friday night in June.
Beautiful sunset here and amazing views of the ocean. Toilets a little dirty but that's to be expected when there are no lights inside.
North Island ▷ Waikato ▷ Waitomo ▷
Good facilities, friendly, very quiet when we visited in May.
Some burnt out cars in corner though which we found a bit disconcerting.
Really nice facilities though, it's just a little park i.e piece of grass just outside the tiny town of piopio but great place to stop off on the way to Waitomo caves or on the way down to Taranaki, and very reasonably priced for power, some kitchen facilities and showers. Make sure you have penny card though which you can purchase from the dairy up the road. Can pay for the site with cash which is 5$ per vehicle per night.

The most beautiful camp spot ever!
Stunning river and amazing place to swim!!! If you walk down to the left from the campsite.
Lots of space to park but gets busy on the summer.
Truly a perfect camp spot. Toilets were quite dirty but that's to be expected when the camp is completely full.
North Island ▷ Hawkes Bay ▷ Waipukurau ▷
Such a beautiful spot!
Amazing place to spend a couple of nights especially in summer. Beautiful beach and clean facilities. There was outdoor cold showers, clean water available and toilets.
North Island ▷ Wairarapa ▷ Featherston ▷
Stunning spot at the lake with a lot of space and some shelter to cook, but the state of the toilet was horrific.
Don't recommend if you don't have your own as it is possibly worst state toilet have ever seen.
Maybe things have changed since we stayed in December 2025 as it was busy season maybe on winter it's better.
Also heard there are many leeches in the lake so maybe not good to swim? Beautiful views though.
