  • Lovely location in a carpark near the beach.

3 self-contained vehicles in main carpark and space for a few more along a small road up the area right next to the beach. We parked right next to the fun little playground for the kids. Working, but dirty bbq. Be aware, carpark floods along the hedge line in heavy rain and LOTS of cars coming in and out at speed late at night, including one very noisy dirt bike who did a few laps. Perhaps they were fisherman or just very curious to check the tides at 10 pm. Hmmm.

  • Toilets OK.

BBQ (electric) plus numerous sheltered picnic tables. Water supply from hidden tap. Great views, fishing and start point for the Patea loop walk.

  • I love this place.

The tide is fascinating to watch going in then out of the beach. The walls at the river mouth create a natural surf pool, you can predict each wave. No reception but you can have it at the FC up the road. Loved walking there from the beach. Beautiful sunset and occasional train passing by and wind mills look interesting. Freedom camp officers very friendly too.

  • Horrible spot.

Dodgy place. Only 2 selfcontained allowed. Dirty toilets.

  • The park has 2 campervan spots facing the ocean, and signs saying there are 3 allowed away from the ocean at the park entrance.

I seem to remember them saying only self-contained are allowed, even tho some websites are saying tents and cars are ok. The beach was blustery-as! Like, we went for a walk on the beach and gave it up after 3 minutes so as not to get blinded by sand. And there are sand dunes both above the beach and along the river. There's a minimal toilet facility by the beach -- a minute or two walk from the farther camping area -- not terribly well maintained.
