  • Plenty of spaces (but they got full by evening), hot showers for $4 with paywave and 24 hour toilets nearby.

More toilets near the main road (famous Hundertwasser decor) and fresh water for bottles across the road. A dump station and drinking water refill are a few mins drive away

  • Shower is $4, 6 minutes now.

    Nice spot

  • Very nice a site, plenty free car park, plenty toilets, some are 24 hours, hot showers too, now $4 for 6 mins.

There is also dumping site and water supply which are on Waiomio Rd, no clear signs directing to...

  • Fantastic spot, there are a lot of overnight parking places, but they fill up.

Several vans stayed outside the designated area, but had no issues. There are flush toilets and showers, the shops are nearby. It was so good that we came back again two days later

  • Pretty sure there's about 25 spaces for freedom campers now.

Great hot showers for a few dollars and felt very safe with lots of other campers around us. Very popular so fills up reasonably quickly despite the large number of spaces. (We visited in December)

  • Nice spot.

Plenty of space and feels quiet despite being near the town centre. Immaculate showers and toilets, all 24hrs and free for cold showers too.

  • Really nice place.

Free cold showers and very tidy toilets. Felt save all the time. Would recommend it

  • Big, quiet carpark next to a library and three different toilets, one of which stays open 24h.

Two 24h showers as well but didn't try and at least one was broken

  • Nice free camping, many places, toilets clean, cold shower (free) and hot shower (3$ for 5 minutes), calm, nature on one side and the town on the other side, close from shops and a laundromat

  • Fine for a stopover to better places, given the lack of local alternatives.

Site currently gravel, next to some building works. Was initially concerned as seemed to attract the local uni-brows for a spot of early evening powersliding and urinating one metre away from our van. But, actually turned out to be a quiet night in the end. Didn't feel especially relaxed at any point, we moved on first thing and had breakfast at Paihia.

  • Grassy clearing in a car park.

Sign says limit of 4 campers, we arrived as the 4th camper at 1830 local, when we woke up there were 8 vans so the limit gets ignored.

Quiet night no problems, good stop over for a night.

  • Nice quiet car park with toilets.

More camper stayed there than the allowed 4. Was no problem just a little loud at times. Good free spot.

  • Basic camp site, good for one night stay.

Right next to the famous toilet in the town centre.

  • Simple site, there was a construction going next to it so it was a bit bare.

The hundertwasser toilets are worth it though.

  • Nice trees and shady spots.

Only 4 spots but in the end there were 10 vans. A bit noisier than other sites due to its location on town. Toilet was ok but only the one for handicapped was open.

  • The previously designated are is now a construction site - the Kawakawa Hundertwasser Park being built.

Freedom camping still allowed and possible, just not the most pleasant for the time being.

Reviewed over 3 years ago and experienced in February 2019

  • It’s currently under construction so the grassy bit isn’t accessible.

The site itself is alright, toilets are about 50m away but water from the toilets are heavily chlorinated so wouldn’t drink it.

  • The Toilets have vanished, pulled down perhaps ?, the freedom space is a construction site.

Should have just stayed in Paihia Car Park.

  • Kinda noisy.

The do party’s on the weekends so kinda loud at night. Also a lot of lights. Locals just came to our Van, they were nice at first but actually came for money.

    Didn’t really feel that safe.
