Quiet location
Clean toilets
Close to beach
Spacious for vans
Toilets closed overnight
No showers on site
Limited space for larger vans
Good spot right in the middle of town.
Aaron Caulton
Nice little spot with space for 4-5 vans.
Kirsty
Great camping.
Julie
5 small parking allowed pitches.
Veronique Corbin
All good, quiet….
Jiri
Nice little spot with space for 4-5 vans.
Toilets in the car park which shut overnight but cleaned every morning at 7.30am so no complaints. I tried a couple of other freedom camping spots in Whangamata but they only had space for two vans and we're both full whereas it was just me and one other here. It's not far to get to the beach and round the corner from the shops but still quiet enough.

Site holds 5 campers.
Had no problem parking our 7m van, plenty of space to turn around etc. toilets opposite were clean, closed over night roughly from 9pm to 8am. Relatively quiet overnight, can walk to the beach from there.

Small parking lot with nearby toilet.
However, this will be closed at night. There is no shower here. Apparently you can take a shower nearby for 1 dollar, but we didn't find this option.
There are many more toilets nearby. I would recommend the toilet facility in the Whangamatā Maria. A little hidden, but very clean.

Great camping.
Right next to beach. Walk to surf spot, 1€ shower, clean kitchen and toilets. Will come again.

Good spot right in the middle of town.
There are toilets super close and the beach is only a 5-10min walk. It's the carpark behind the i-site.

We stayed on a sat and was quite loud with the noise from the pub.
Great location in the centre of town
We stayed on a sat and was quite loud with the noise from the pub. Also had someone jump on our van in the night. Toilets handy.

Nice place in the town right middle of all eateries and shops.
Downside is only the noise from drunk or merry people 🙂 Had groups of loud people now and then until 1 or 2 am. But if the beach one is full this one is a great free place.

Not enough camp sites, too many permanent caravans.

Great free spot in the heart of downtown, must come early to get one of the limited spots.
The bathrooms were not bad but they do not stay open 24/7, also no showers or water fill up.

5 small parking allowed pitches.
Toilets just in front and clean. Quiet and near a small supermarket. Wifi through the BNZ bank right next to the supermarket.

Pretty basic carpark behind the Information Centre.
The carpark is tarred, and big enough to manoeuvre the camper. Very basic, but free! The down side was the group of drunk people that emerged from (I'm guessing) a near by pub around midnight. It was pretty noisy for a while, but it was a Saturday night... Loses points due to the drunken fools bashing on my camper door at 1am. :(
