Cooking in a PiwiWiwi HiAce Campervan
Chilling in a PiwiWiwi HiAce Campervan

Exceptional service and the luxury of a full standing height campervan

PiwiWiwi might have a silly name, but we're totally serious about New Zealand road trips.

Our campervans are fully kitted out to comfortably transport you around New Zealand checking everything our country has to offer (beaches, walks, waterfalls, vineyards, or museums - whatever floats your particular boat...)

We have vans tall enough to stand up in yet small enough to park easily. They are all well equipped - we've been campervanning for years, so know what you need and what gets in the way - you just need to bring your clothes, buy some food, and you're away. Our vans have stereos that you can plug your iPod into (you can’t have a road trip without a soundtrack) and USB charging points to keep your gadgets full of juice. For all you surfers - we're also the only company in NZ with surfboard stroage straps in our vans to keep your boards safely out of your way when you're not in the waves. For cyclists - we have bike racks for our vans too.

All of our vans are certified SELF CONTAINED so you have access to NZ's beautiful FREEDOM CAMPING spots.

Our customers seem to be happy with what we do... why not give us a go too?

Unfortunately we had to undergo many challenges to our NZ travel - significantly shortened by Corona we could only tour a bit more than half of the South Island instead of the entire country. The car was fine, clean, absolutely roadworthy and had exactly the basic features we were expecting and which are necessary for an uncomplicated journey. Nick was very helpful in picking us up at the airport and also dropping us there on short notice just before the lockdown became implemented. When it will be possible to freely travel the world one day and to also enter NZ again without difficult restrictions we will certainly consider to continue our tour with a Piwiwi camper.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience with PiwiWiwi. We had the van for 21 days driving it everyday and had no trouble with it at all. The layout of the van is very well thought out and there is plenty of space. It was very clean and Nick made sure there was everything we needed, even a hot water bottle which was a lovely touch! We were offered extra blankets as well due to the weather being a bit colder and the bed was very comfortable. Nick gave us loads of advice for planning our route and was only a call or a text away if we wanted to contact him. He really went the extra mile with us once our flights and travel from New Zealand was stopped due to the coronavirus lockdown, offering us help, being understanding with changing plans and even a place to camp near him if we got stuck. We were glad to have booked with a smaller company as we felt we had a really genuine experience and have already recommended them to all our friends and family. We can’t wait to be able to go on another holiday using one of their vans. We honestly believe there is no better campervan company in the whole of New Zealand.

After spending 5 weeks traversing the beautiful South Island of New Zealand just a year ago, our experience with Piwiwiwi was so good that we came back for another 3 week adventure! As was the case the first time around, Nick was waiting to pick us up at the airport to take us to our home on wheels. Julie and the kids were there to meet us with a warm welcome and the process of getting us roadtrip ready began. From the paperwork side of things, to the van tour, Nick was thorough but always mindful of our eagerness to get out on the road. And I must say that in the space of 12 months, he had made changes to enhance the experience even more than before.

On the road we quickly got the hang of how everything worked, and were delighted with how easy it was to transition our home from lounge, to dining room, to bedroom. The kitchen was well set out and made life cooking a breeze. The high roof was also great as it meant standing straight was possible. There was also outdoor furniture and loads of storage. Surprisingly for a van similar in size to a car it was amazing how everything fit so well without becoming cumbersome. The van was easy to drive and is clearly serviced regularly.

Overall we have to say how great the Piwiwiwi experience was (again) for us. For a small family run business we just wouldn't go any other way.

Thanks again to Nick, Julie and the kids. We'll be seeing you again real soon (still too much to see and do!)

We had a wonderful experience with PiwiWiwi. We loved our van. It was just what we needed to enjoy our adventure. Working with Nick was excellent from beginning to end. He truly cares and takes good care of his vans. We wanted to support a local, smaller company and are glad we did!

Everything is organized and had been thought of. We felt really good heading out after the orientation. I can highly recommend PiwiWiwi!

Nick is the epitome of the quintessential, madly enthusiastic, honest, reliable Kiwi. Thanks so much Nick for setting me up in fine style for my Kiwi adventure with my van. So great to know NZ has people like you.How lucky was I to stumble across you. I'll be back!

We spent just over two weeks in our PiwiWiwi campervan and we absolutely loved the entire experience. Nick and his wife Julie, the owners, were amazingly hospitable - from picking us up in the airport to outfitting the van with a bike rack for our mountain bikes to a full rundown of how the van worked so we didn't run into any surprises on the road. The van was extremely clean and well organized when we arrived. Nick and Julie stock each van with great additional amenities (all listed on their website for research ahead of time) like camp chairs and coffee makers so we were able to get started on our vacation and not spend time or money purchasing items we wouldn't be taking home with us. They also provided really great tips on things that can make an international road trip a bit stressful, like groceries and gas.

Once we got going, we quickly began to appreciate how well the van was laid out. There was ample storage for our bags (they recommend to bring soft-sided bags instead of suitcases, we agree!), bike gear, and food without feeling cluttered. The first few days of our trip we experienced some heavy rain, making us happy to have the built-in kitchen and the height of the camper van to easily cook and move around without feeling cramped or hunched over. We were easily able to set up the dining table and play cards or build the bed area to lay and read books while the rain was pouring without having to get out of the van itself.

The height and length of the van itself was ideal - long and tall enough to be comfortable but still small enough to drive comfortably on narrower roads and park easily in holiday parks. Our camper van was also entirely reliable on our trip, we didn't have any mechanical issues (due to Nick's meticulous upkeep). We were able to traverse across the south island with confidence that we'd arrive at our next destination safely.

We don't think you'll find a better camper van service in New Zealand!

Piwiwiwi's camper van experience was everything that we imagined and more!
The van that we hired was so well looked after that we had little to no issues with it. It was spacious, comfortable and the set up of the interior was extremely convenient.
Due to being a smaller family business, we received a very personal experience which I doubt we would have received in any other company.
Nick and Julie were always only a phone call away which gave us great comfort and safety for our first little holiday. They also provided us with really useful information which helped us shape our trip, especially with weather changes etc.

10/10 would recommend going with PiwiWiwi.

Look no further for a great camper experience! If you are like me, you have been putting in lots of research into the best possible company for your time in NZ, and let me tell you: This. Is. It. Nick is extremely helpful and was available for any question we had along our route. He gave great suggestions on things to visit or bypass, which saved us loads up time. The van ran great, was a perfect size for two people, me 6'1 and my girlfriend 5'6 had no problems fitting inside. The stand up is a must! Cooking inside the van lets you avoid the nasty sand flies that plague NZ. The extras they include go a long way, including extra blankets for cold nights, travel mugs, chairs and a table. These things cost extra at every other place! Go with Piwiwiwi and you will not be disappointed. Thanks to Piwiwiwi for making our trip memorable and exciting!!!

We could not have been happier renting with PiwiWiwi Campervans.

We rented one of the new edition campervans and from start to finish, we were not disappointed. Right from being picked up at the airport, to Nick showing us the personal touches on the van, to the tips on our road trip that we planned out and the communication for coming back and doing final checks. We've done SNZ before in a campervan through a larger company (rather than smaller family owned, like Nick's) and all of the small issues we found (thin mattress, underutilized space, old & cheap extras like fold up chairs and kitchen equipment) were corrected in this van. You can tell that having someone like Nick, who's traveled in campervans extensively, really helped towards innovating the van based on his experiences. You don't get that with corporate enterprises!. The van itself did us well and Nick sent us off with plenty of information on the inside of the van, mechanics of running and living in it (petrol, dumping etc.) which is something that I've not had before with other companies (usually it's just a manual thrown at you to read at your own convenience).

One of our main reasons behind choosing PiwiWiwi campervans was due to the lack of advertising on the van - made you feel (and we were treated...) like a local! The van (as well as all the others I hear) also has a diary inside with everyone's experiences so you can rely on some more recent and real life experiences of fellow travellers. Helps on those long drives from place to place.

All in all an amazing experience and we're already looking to come back and (hopefully) take the same van out for another grand adventure.

We had a brilliant trip in our campervan with Piwiwiwi! The van was perfect, just the right size for 2 people and we had no issues at all during our trip. The van was easy to drive, even in cities because it fit into a standard parking space. It was really comfy to sleep in, but take an eye mask if you're easily woken by sunlight! Nick was really helpful when we picked up the van, we got some tips about our route which were all great additions and had a thorough introduction to the van. We couldn't recommend Piwiwiwi highly enough!

We had a great time on South Island in our Toyota Hiace piwiwiwi camper. We hired for 33 days, and our van was perfect for the trip. It's easy to drive and park, has loads of clever storage space, and you've plenty of room to stand and cook in the van. The bed stretches across the full width of the van; and although it may be slightly short if you're 6ft, it was really comfy to sleep on. Not once did either of us consider that we might be more comfortable in a "proper" bed at a motel.
We travelled all over South Island, from remote DOC sites down gravel tracks to big powered sites in cities. This van is superbly put together, with great attention to detail and a very high quality of fittings. We've stayed in several campervans over the years and even owned one for a while. This van from piwiwiwi beats them all for comfort and ease of use. The high top means that you will notice wind more when driving, and the engine can feel a little underpowered when climbing Takaka hill for example; but these are minor criticisms. I'd take the easy driving on narrow winding roads and the "park it anywhere" attitude over a bit more horsepower any day. Nick provided a really personal service, collecting us from our arrival address in the city on the first day, and taking us back again on the last day after we'd (reluctantly) returned the van. We left NZ a few days later and there's no doubt that we will have another van from piwiwiwi next time we're back!

Piwiwiwi Campervan Rentals is outstanding on all fronts. Communication and arrangements were clear, easy and straightforward. Nick is very congenial and knowledgeable regarding his campers and traveling with them in New Zealand. The van I rented is a newer model automatic in which I spent ten glorious days and nights. It is immediately apparent that much thought and care has gone into every detail when creating this comfortable home on wheels. So many in fact this list might seem long but frankly these are the difference makers when choosing a camping vehicle. (I’ve experienced a few !). The sleeping /seating cushions are more than comfortable, the perfect blend of softness and support. The curtains are attractive double fabric blackout and insulating. The galley is cleverly designed making use of and providing everything you need. Storage space is very ample without overlapping into living space, helping keep things organized and tidy. The inside is insulated providing surprising soundproofing also. I loved having the screened awning type windows on the upper roof walls. Great for venting even if it rained outside, which it didn’t. 😜. The toilet on board is cleverly tucked away but readily available making thins self contained camper Freedom Camp friendly, which you absolutely want camping in New Zealand. Other worthy mentions are the expansive interior height. Tall people will be sooo happy. The van drives really well especially with Nick’s tips on strategic usage of gears. The van (affectionately known as Hector) has plenty of ground clearance and big capable tires, steering and brakes A1. One thing, and Nick addresses this in his very detailed and helpful orientation, is the affect of wind on the van. It can, and will influence how you drive in windy conditions, but I easily adapted on the few occasions this occurred. Piwiwiwi was able to accommodate my desire to camp with a bike by providing both rack and bike. Would definitely rent again !
