Cycling through Hawke's Bay wine country on a warm summer day is a genuinely good way to spend your time. The terrain is flat and easy, the trails connect the vineyards nicely, and you get to arrive at each cellar door on your own terms. Most travellers manage to knock off a solid handful of wineries in the day, and a few ambitious types have pushed through to seven or more.
A couple of things worth knowing ahead of time. Start early, bring water and sunscreen, and be aware that most cellar doors charge for tastings on top of the bike hire. The bike hire cost does draw some comment in the reviews, so go in eyes open on the pricing. That said, people consistently come away happy with the experience overall.
My pick would be the e-bike option if you want a bit of insurance against the heat, especially in peak summer. The staff are friendly and will send you off with a map and some useful local tips, which makes the self-guided format feel pretty relaxed rather than aimless. Use promo code RANKERS to take 10% off your booking, which softens the cost a bit and helps keep us going too.
Self-guided winery bike hire that starts right among the vines of the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle Wine Districts. Bikes, e-bikes and tandems on flat trails, and we’ll collect your wine for you. Hawke’s Bay wine country, sorted.
Your pace, your route, your story.
Pick up your bike at Roys Hill and you're already in wine country. We sit right between the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle Wine Districts, so there's no shuttle, no transfer and no tour group to keep up with. We'll give you a route map and point you to the cellar doors that are open that day. The trails are flat and easy, and much of the riding is on off-road cycle trails that run beside the roads.
How the day works
Arrive at the Roys Hill Shop, and we'll fit your bikes and helmets and run through the route with you. Then it's over to you. Visit as many or as few wineries as you like, stay as long as you like, and head back when you're ready. If you get a flat tyre or need a hand, we're a phone call away.
Not sure how far you want to ride? Ask about our Gimblett ride. It's 12 to 14 km, all on cycle trails with no road riding, and it's the one we suggest for anyone who'd rather take it easy. Want a longer ride? The Bridge Pa Triangle route is 24 to 26 km, mainly on cycle trails with about 1 km on the road. You cycle out to our furthest winery in the area.
We'll collect your wine
Found a bottle (or six) you can't leave without? Buy it before 3pm and we'll collect it from the winery and have it ready for you at the end of the day. No juggling bottles in your basket, no worrying about breakages.
Bikes for everyone in the group
Comfortable hybrid bikes, e-bikes and tandems, all with a front basket. The e-bikes mean you'll finish the day grinning, not gasping, and they're popular, so book ahead if you want one.
Riding with little ones? We have an infant seat for children aged 1 and over who can sit upright unsupported and wear a fitted helmet, and a kids' trailer for children aged 2 and over. Bringing the family pet? We have a dog trailer for small dogs, so let us know when you book.
Want a story with your wine?
Try a Murder Mystery or Winemaker's Treasure Hunt ride. Your phone guides you between cellar doors with clues, riddles and QR codes, and you solve it by the last stop. It's like an escape room in a vineyard, except it takes all day and you're on a bike.
Murder Mystery: a wine critic has been found dead, and the suspects are scattered across four local wineries. You're the detective. Everyone else is already in the story. There's no role-play, no costumes and nobody has to act. The case was written by an award-winning crime writer, so expect proper twists.
Winemaker's Treasure Hunt: you're the treasure seeker, following a trail of clues left by a winemaker. It's family friendly, so it works just as well for kids as it does for grown-ups.
Two of you is plenty, and the games work best with 2 to 6 players. Bigger groups can split into rival teams and race each other to the answer. We'll help plan your route and wineries for the day.
Not a wine drinker?
There's still a story to solve. The trails and the games are for everyone, so bring along the friend who'd rather ride than taste.
Lunch
Bring a picnic, or stop at a winery cafe along the way. We'll tell you what's open when you arrive.
Good to know
Wine tastings are paid at each winery, and charges vary from place to place.
We ride in most weather, but not in heavy rain or strong winds.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a water bottle.
We're open Wednesday to Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday.
Book online at onyerbikehb.co.nz or call us on 021 292 8080.
