Information

Okarito Camping Ground

An amazing place with a friendly vibe, there are lots of little alcoves to put your tent up in. Designated BBQ areas and a short walk to the beach. So well worth the visit!

There are some great walks to do here to the trig and further on to Three and Five mile bay. There are interpretation panels at the top of the trig where it explains the history of the area in the midst of the gold rush when this place was pumping - hard to imaging now.... The walk over the top can be turned into a loopwalk when the tide is low to make it back to Okarito. Check out the white herons.

Camping Fees

Adult $18; Child free
Shower $2/ 4mins
BBQ $2/ 20 mins
Note: Option of paying by cash or EFTPOS

Bookings

No advance bookings taken for the campground and in the busy holiday season (especially Christmas to 15 January) we suggest arrival by mid-afternoon to ensure you find a camping site. If demand is high an adjacent overflow camping area will be set up.

Registration

Please self-register on arrival prior to establishing your campsite. Deposit registration slip and cash in honesty box. If you prefer to pay by EFTPOS and/or require change (for camping, shower, BBQ) please see campground host. If host is not available write message on registration slip and they will follow up with you. During summer months campground hosts are resident on site and in winter they visit several times a day.

  • Such a cool west coast camping location.

Very clean facilities & a great vibe. Will definitely recommend to friends & family!

  • Nice spot and very nice host.

Showers were good and the kitchen although small was warm and had power. You’re close to walks here and they have a large drying line if you’ve got wets things - quite likely around here.

  • This place is well worth the visit.

The spot is incredible. Views of mountains and a short walk to the beach. The current owners Paul and Linda were amazing. Very insightful and gave lots of tips and pointers for our stay! Was going to stay a second night but something came up. Will be back again!

  • Beautiful community run facility.

We got there around 2pm and filled up fast but they can accommodate with overflow paddock. Hots showers $2 for 4mins. Great facilities lovely walks. We will be back as it was a great vibe and amazing weather

  • Lovely clean, flat site, very quiet.

Toilets, showers ($2), washing up facilities, no cooking stoves but nice shelter to cook in if you have a stove. Short walk to Kayak hire centre for Okarito Lagoon and to a wild and beautiful beach for sunset views. No powered sites for campervans. Some sand flies but it is the West Coast, you can but natural repellent in town that seems to work OK.

  • Great place to stay.

Wonderfully friendly hosts. You can hear the soothing sounds of the sea and there’s a swimming lagoon just a minute walk away. The trig point walk was a highlight - stunning views from the top up and down the coast. Basic, but clean facilities.

  • Great place!

Very friendly host, very clean facilities (toilet, hot shower for 2 dollars, kitchen), free wifi. Kayak at the lagoon at three minutes and nice walks! Sandflies: not too bad. Recommended!

  • Sandflies en masse!

18$ per person plus 2$ for 4 minutes shower

But only at dusk and in the mornings, afternoons are ok.

2 minutes walk to the beach and you can hear the waves from the campsite. Great staff, small sink and BBQ area, communal area.

Spots are very sheltered, facilities are spotless!

  • Awesome, quiet spot!

We stayed for one night (Tuesday night) and there were only a few other campers. Could have been that the weather was torrential, but anyways! Friendly camp host $15pp/per night. $2 for a 4 minute hot shower. Sweet little kitchen space with fridge and some charging outlets/lounges. Outside sink area and bbq. Sites had a picnic table too. Everything super clean. We woke up to glorious sunshine and a view of some snow capped mountains, sunrise over the lagoon and lots of bird life. A special spot - would recommend!

  • Okarito is a quaint town.

The camp hosts very friendly, good facilities which weren’t overused or crowded, camp is a short walk to a lagoon and Wild West Coast beach beyond. Fires were permitted so I enjoyed a wonderful camp fire and watched the sunset on the beach. Kayak trip on the lagoon a must do!

  • Great campsite!

$15 each to stay and then $2 for a coin for showers (4 mins hot water). Only non powered sites which was fine. Very quiet and 2 mins walk from the beach (can hear the ocean at night). Clean toilets, common area with fridge and plug sockets (phones only). Host available on site during summer. For the same price we stayed in a DOC site previously that was no where near as nice as this!

  • We have stayed at Okarito Campground for 2 nights and loved it.

The facilities are spotless, the hosts extremely friendly and helpful and Okarito has much to offer for such a small place. You can kayak, go on a boat ride, visit kiwis and go on a variety of walks without leaving the village. This is a hidden gem with a very interesting past. The present inhabitants are passionate about protecting the stunning lagoon and we are so pleased we have finally visited here.

  • Would endorse everything written in the reviews over the past year!

We were here in July 2020 and although its a bit off the main highway that makes the camp ground so much more attractive. Love the community run aspect and the person we met was very friendly and helpful. Facilities clean and monitored daily. Wild West Coast beach within easy walk and sites protected by mainly large flax plants
