Whakapapa Holiday Park in the winter - primo!

Information

We are in the heart of the Tongariro National Park, designated a dual World Heritage area for its very important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as the outstanding features and history of the volcanic landscape.

Campervan sites and cabins are sheltered amongst the beautiful, native beech trees of the Tongariro National Park. A 32 bed lodge and several tent sites are also available, all bookable online.

Many lovely walking tracks are nearby, starting within the village. Enjoy the Taranaki waterfall, Whakapapa river, mountain views and stunning volcanic features of the land.

The Tongariro Crossing, the world-famous 1 day hike, is just a short shuttle ride away.

Whakapapa ski field is only 6 kms further up the road, arguably one of New Zealand’s best ski fields.

If that’s not enough for you, then take advantage of the mountain biking, river rafting, trout fishing, canoeing and other outdoor activities nearby.

Very welcoming site, with helpful, friendly management. Great location among the trees, and a good shuttle for the Alpine Crossing. Free wifi, showers, hair dryers. Large kitchen and good laundry facilities. Several walks directly from site.

The kitchen is fantastic. Unfortunately the camping options are quite limited if you want to pitch a tent - you have the choice of a small patch under a bright streetlamp, or a gravel area which will damage tents and does not accept pegs. It's a shame, because otherwise this would be a great campsite.

Best campground we had on our journey. Nice spots in the woods with good walks nearby. Lots of clean facilities (big kitchen and hot showers). Drive to the city where our Crossing Shuttle took off was about 15 minutes. There is also a shuttle that picks you up at the campground. Amazing view of the stars at night. Fully recommended!

A lovely peaceful campsite. Everyone gets there own little bay which gives you a bit of privacy. Good toilet and shower facilities, and kitchen with some pots and pans you can use. Great location being close to the information centre and close to many of start of the walking tracks. Stunning views looking up at the mountain above. Dump station for carvans on site.

Very good place to stay if you want to walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - 23 $ pp for a powered site in this place absolutely okay. Clean facilities, very hot showers (so good after the walk!), laundry 4$, dryer just 1$ (and the laundry was dry!). Shuttle to the Crossing just outside the reception.

Stayed here the night before and after crossing. Facilities exactly as needed - kitchens, washrooms, laundry - and super easy and safe to get onto the crossing (and cheap, only NZD 40 per person for the hike). Definitely stay here the night after doing the Tongariro Crossing as you’ll be too tired to drive on and can have a hot shower and put your feet up!

Nice spot with a stream and mountain views. Big well stocked kitchen with room for lots of people. Good big bathroom (with hairdryer!) , some variability in shower temperature but generally good (there was also a bath!!)
46$ for two people powered van per night
Near the tongarario visitor centre which was interesting. Shuttle to the crossing was at 7/8/9am from the campsite and cost 40dollars per person return
Great campsite with good facilities, a little on the expensive side but great for before and after the crossing plus other little walks to do from the site.

Great place to spend a couple of nights if you want to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, just wish we'd had a bit longer to do a bit more exploring of the area and other walks available. Good facilities. Recommend.

The booking went smoothly, there was no issues at all and we appreciated all the informations that were given to us regarding the hikings in the area on our arrival.
The camping site is quite big, so are the facilities.
There are plenty of hot showers, WC, washing machines, kitchen amenities.
There is even a small shop at the entrance.

Ideal location if you are doing the crossing. Unfortunately we had bad weather so ended up doing some alternative walks, the silica rapids and the taranaki falls. Camping sites are set up nice, spots are large enough. Kitchen, showers and toilets were clean and showers were free. Great place for a couple of nights!

Good kitchen facilities, adequate shower facilities with unlimited hot water. The spaces for campervans are small but have a vegetation barriers between them. Wifi is included in the fee. The only food options after Labor Day seem to be the two hotels as the tavern and cafe were both closed on the day I left for my hike and returned from my hike. Overall good facilities even if the price is a bit steep for a DOC with tiny campervan spaces.
