    This campsite was amazing!

We wanted somewhere to stay while driving round the Coromandel and this did not disappoint.

Beautiful beach only 5 mins walk away through the forest. We arrived late and we were able to pick our spot and pay in the morning. Coffee shop and cute little shop by reception. Good kitchen facilities, hot showers, laundry facilities, bbq etc all available.

Traditional campsite (read no signal/No wifi).

Really good vibe though, good shop on site for basics amentities and walking distance to the most perfect untouched beach.

Very relaxing and refreshing and felt very out of the way (in a good way). Owners were friendly.

Downsides for us : filling up water for the van was difficult, only 2 drinking water taps not accessible by a hose and the camp is close to a sewerage so all other water taps aren’t drinkable. Also it was raining pretty hard when we arrived and our spot flooded so we had to move places.

From the reviews this place sounded good- and it was!!

It doesn’t hurt that we were also the ONLY campers there!! Wasn’t sure they were even open until we saw the checkin box during off hours. Easy as. We picked a space ( had a choice of 70:) and set up. The bathrooms, kitchen and chill room are clean and tidy- great to have a microwave available. The beach is an easy stroll and is great. Guys surfing - not so much for swimming, but the beach goes on forever and is a great walk. Non- powered sites are $11 and 5 minute HOT showers are $1. Owner is really friendly.

Short walk through the forest to the beautiful beach.

Strange campsite layout, lot of larger groups. Campsite was almost full, stayed on non-powered site outside the area, but could use facilities - which were ok and clean. Tons of flies and dust.

Beautifully situated campsite, surrounded by forest, away from the main route.

We really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere here. The sanitary facilities are kept clean and simple. They fit wonderfully into the natural environment. The grass pitches are large enough. A beautiful path leads to a long and hardly visited sandy beach in five minutes. Highly recommended.

A beautiful location on the coast.

We walked along the beach, swam and enjoyed the sun. And after contacts with locals we decided not to go (again) to the tourist toppers (where many take a selfie), but to taste the many other highlights of the Coromandel. And we enjoyed it very much!

Before staying at Opoutere, we had enjoyed another top-rated campsite with very modern facilities and sites right on the water, so I was hoping we had left the best till last rather than the other way

    around.

As it turned out, we had. Firstly, the owners were good to deal with, and their shop had lots of basics and a proper espresso service. Secondly, the site we had was a very nice spot. Thirdly, the extended area is naturally awesome and we took advantage of everything except the loan kayaks, about which I wish we had known at the time as the stream is very inviting.

There is a lovely clearing - the “chillout lawn” - with swings and level ground for cricket, kites, and frisbee, all of which would admittedly be at risk of being lost to the surrounding trees. Boules.

The forest and beach are the jewels in the crown, hard to beat anywhere in the world. Watching the super blood wolf moon rising dead ahead from the beach after pondering the heavens and spotting constellations, satellites and shooting stars has, I am sure, given our kids memories they will deeply cherish.

The site appears to be taking some steps to brand itself nicely and promote itself professionally, so I can only hope it does not become too popular! It could really be a world-class facility if the loom and feel were extended to replacing the clean but basic toilets, showers, chillout room and kitchen. We have been to Opoutere Coastal camping for two summers and we love it.

The location is beautiful, a mix of forest and one of the most beautiful beaches in NZ. The grounds are a mix of different areas with a river running through them. The staff are wonderful, always smily and accomodatating. The campsite has a great vibe because of this. It’s one of our favourite places to camp and the coffee is top-notch too!

Beautifully located, secluded campground, nicely integrated into the natural features.

We found all facilities to be in good and clean condition. The grassy, mainly level sites with spacious dimensions offer a good camping feeling, some feature a picknick bench.

A short walk to the sand beach with great views of the coast with its offshore islands and breaking waves, inviting to relax, take a bath (watch the current!), read, dream or make new friends (we shared the 5 km of beach with approximately 10 other people, 200 gulls and 25 oystercatchers); or a little longer walk to the bay, which, dependent on the tide, may be empty and provide for more views of the versatile local fauna. Some areas of the pine forest is closed because somebody poisoned the pine trees in support of the fauna that grew here prior, hence large branches may fall suddenly and unexpectedly. Interesting concept of conservation...

The keepers seem to take good care of the place, are super friendly and serve the best coffee of the world (or so), when the reception is open.

And one last recommendation: there is no fuel station within 20 km. Don’t arrive on reserve unless you like this sort of kick. We made it on the second to last drop...

    I really enjoyed this campsite.

A young man and lady checked us in, very friendly people. The amenities and facilities are limited but we had a really nice walk through the bush that overlooked the lake and a bench seat that overlooked a beautiful beach. Its a quick walk through the pine trees to the beach. Paid $15pp and were allowed our pick of any site. Powered or unpowered. They have a chill out room where you can charge your stuff or watch TV. Showers $1 for 5 mins but they were nice showers. Zip for hot water in the kitchen. The kitchen is quite small and they only had 2 hotplates when we were there. Another lady was waiting to cook dinner too. They also have a small covered outdoor dining area. No wifi and very limited reception.

Great location as it's only a few minutes walk through some woods to the beach.

Get up early and catch the sunrise across the Pacific. It's a very peaceful setting too. We used the BBQ; no grease fires to report! $15 per person per night for an unpowered site in March 2016.

Awesome spot, close to whangamata, surf beach is a ten min walk through forest, five minutes to the estuary.

Facilities are for the most part clean and tidy. The showers last much longer than the standard five minutes for your 1 dollar. They could have more fridges and freezers for the holiday period as space is a premium. There was no kettle in the kitchen when we were there and the two free gas BBQ's looked to have never had their trays cleaned out and started a grease fire while we were there! The managers are both really friendly and accommodating.

Great campsite in a really nice location.

It was $30 (Nov 15) for the two of us and you get a really nice spot as well. You are near a beautiful beach just a 5 minute walk. There are two buildings one of them was closed in November but there weren't many others at that time. The kitchen was OK and the showers were good ($1 coin). It was 5 km from the main road but definitely worth the drive on a sealed road.

    This place was great.

It was in an awesome location- a super fun surf break 5 mins walk away, the people at reception were super accommodating and the facilities were good. The only reason I'm not giving them a 10 is because the showers were pretty weak and very low placed, this isn't a massive deal but it makes washing your hair after a day in the surf pretty difficult.
