Most lovely hosts.
Super helpful. The front part is fine, the back part is for permanent residents - which is of course also fine. Very interesting people and super friendly.
But they also have a normal life and leave early, which was giving us an early morning wake up.

We stayed here the night before doing the tongariro crossing.
Nothing special and sadly quiet noisy. Good enough for one night.

Opoutere Coastal Camping
Go there if you want to be away from tourist only camp grounds.
We met some lovely Kiwi folks there.
Yes, the place is not the most modern one.
Yes, you have to pay a dollar for showers and
Yes, this is not your normal top10 camp ground.
But the place is charming with an awesome beach only minutes away. You barely have signal and the night skies are outstanding.
We came late and followed the instructions written on the door. Picked our spot and paid the next day.

We came around 3 pm and managed to get the last big slot.
Some smaller ones were still available
Nothing to complain. Toilets are fine, no fees and bus stop is right around the corner.
