Rankers Crew
I worked in the Abel Tasman for 12 years and know it well. If a boat cruise (and perhaps a hike) is your thing, here’s what I’d do.
Ideally start from Kaiteriteri (it’s a deep water bay and much easier to board your boat).
Start on the earliest boat.
Head to the northern most drop off point at Totoranui. This way you’ll see the entire National Park by boat. It’s much quieter in the northern area (most people hop off well before then).
If you choose the boat cruise only, then you’ll turn around and head your way home, knowing you’ve seen the best of this very scenic national park.
If you’d like a little hike / adventure and perhaps a solitude swim, then the best short section is between Totoranui and the Awaroa tidal crossing. There’s so many secluded coves in this section, without the people. It’s a magic, less visited area. I’d recommend a diversion off the track to visit the beaches along the way. Yes, you’ll need to walk back the way you came to Totoranui to board a boat again, but the views are fantastic, with less people, more options for solo beach goodness. It’s way superior to the busier southern end. You’ll arrive at Totoranui at 11.10am and have 2.5 hours of great beach adventure before boarding the boat again at 2.40pm.
