Not too cheap, but worth the money!
If you don’t need power, try to get Hut 11-13 for the best view on the volcanos!
The Facilities were not new but very effective and clean. There is a large, simple kitchen with a large common room to share dinner.
On 13th of November it was not empty any more.
Every tap is drinking water.
Totally recommended!

Nice place right on the beach basically.
The panorama ist stunning! Unfortunately it was quite crowded that night (including a gigantic purple Camping Bus partially blocking everyone’s view). Can’t say if it’s normal to be so full or if it was a coincidence because the weather was about to get quite bad and everyone looked for a place to stay in the area.
Nevertheless there was a place to do dishwashing (no light, bring something) as well as a shared library and two quite simple toilets.
If you can, try to come not too late because there are only 6-7 places with excellent view over the bay. Collect shells on the beach!
NZD 10 for two per night.

Campsite near the Maitai River, loads of sandflies therefor.
No cellphone reception on the whole campground (spark), WiFi for 5 NZD. Facilities were superclean and the very big place was quite nice under some large trees.

8 NZD pp, No shower, think that’s a bit much.
But the campsite was fine. A large area with fire places and a small river to cross. Nice little walk up battle hill.
Public toilets weren’t clean.

This place is unique!
The owners are super friendly and really care about the site and the people! Fresh eggs from the farm and lemons on the table. Took us to a glow worm place, stunning! Don’t mind the highway, hardly noticeable.
Everything was Super new and clean.
Oh and bring meat, there is THE Grill.
thanks so much! Highly recommended!

Huge campsite!
Direct access to the beach. Simple but clean facilities, friendly warden.
Can‘t imagine the campground to be fully booked somewhen...
Recommended for a stop on the way north.

Quite Big Campsite right behind the dam of a beautiful beach.
Very friendly warden and a big kitchen as well as very old but clean but small facilities.
Pub right next to the campsite.
NZD 10 pp for an unpowered.
If you don’t need power, you can stay right next to the dam behind some high bush wich is quite private then.

Though a little hard to find, this campsite right next to the beach (behind the dunes) with clean facilities and a nice little „cellphone reception and nice view“ post on top of the dunes was really worth
the money and a perfect place to stay. Benches with tables are provided for the unpowered sites!
We were unpowered but the powered sites were inside a little yard. Maybe 5-6 places and not too spacious...
Payment is made by putting an envelope into a postbox next to the lavatory. 6 for the unpowered site, 2 pp and 2 per hot shower.
Washing machine provided donation based.
