These caves are a great alternative to the Waitomo Caves.
The Waipu Caves are for free and easy to access. There is a stream and there are also glowworms in the cave.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
Of course it is a shame that you have to pay to see something which is produced by mother earth.
Nonetheless I recommend to visit the Thermal Wonderland and to join the free guided tour because it is fascinating to see this natural phenomenon.

Tapeka Point
If you are in Paihia, I really recommend you taking the ferry to Russell.
The ferry costs little money! Russell is a much nicer place and has much better beaches. And from Russell you can go to the Tapeka Point which is a great lookout with 360 degree views. Highly recommended!!

Karangahake Windows Walk
This is a great walk.
You can see both the Gorge with the river and the mining. It was exciting to enter the old mines.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing
I had great weather when I did the Tongariro Crossing and it was simply awesome!!
There are so many different, unbelievable things to see on the track and for that it is my favourite track so far.
