Great location right at the beautiful beach.
You can choose your exact spot while booking, so try to get one close to the beach. There’s gates to the walkway along the beach. Great clean facilities. Unfortunately, we found it super crowded with cars, vans, tents, everywhere you look.

We stayed here for two nights.
Beautiful volcano view. Several hiking tracks start right at the visitor center.

We had a beautiful powered site with sea view.
Very good facilities, big showers (5min warm water) with a big changing area.
North Island ▷ Coromandel ▷ Tairua ▷
Nice view, quiet at night and a nice walk up the hill closeby.
We were the first ones at 4pm, and by 5 all the spots were filled.

We spontaneously decided to camp on a powered site at the paid campground around the corner, and that turned out to be our luck: We met a couple who had parked on this freedom campground for the night
(the only car) and someone threw stones through their windows at night :( They reported the incident to the police, so it hopefully won’t happen again, but still fyi. The location is beautiful.

We arrived a bit after 5pm and got the second last spot.
It’s beautiful but super windy, so if you have a light sleep bring some ear plugs.

Close to a beautiful black sand beach, basic but good facilities.
You can pay in the library in the village or via bank transfer.

We were a bit concerned after reading the latest reviews about suspicious people hanging around, but still wanted to check out the location.
It’s a nice spot close to the beach with free toilets. But we decided to leave because of several potentially homeless people who were on site with their rundown vans, consuming drugs and creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. We are traveling with a small child, so didn’t want to risk getting into trouble. Pity.

Very pretty location.
Nice separation between the spots for large vehicles in the Pokaka area (you need to select your area during the booking process). Someone came by to check if you had paid in the morning.

The layout of the campground is basically several grassy bays, each with space for around 10 tents or vehicles.
Beach access is just across the gravel road from each bay. The camp spots are numbered, but you don’t get a spot assigned and need to look around for a free spot. We were there between Christmas and NY and it was very full. Very good facilities with cold showers. Beautiful area, obviously. The gravel road isn’t bad at all, the gravel is not really lose. It’s just quite narrow.

It’s very cramped and no privacy or literally any space around your vehicle on the powered spots.
Friendly owners.

It’s a nice location close to the beach.
We found the powered sites a bit cramped with just a spot for parking, no place to set up a table or so. Bathroom a bit outdated. But there’s a nice playground and even some farm animals, so great for kids.

Ottos Corner is close to the lake and beautiful.
Convenient location close to Franz Josef.

Scenic spot.
Lake is suitable for swimming. Lots of sandflies and mosquitoes. As others have written, the spots don’t have numbers as indicated on the DOC website and everyone parks where they want.
