Ranfurly

Gateway to the Maniototo

Ranfurly sits at the heart of SH85 country, and that's reason enough to stop. This is the kind of place that rewards you for leaving the main drag between Queenstown and Wanaka behind. The Maniototo is wide, flat, and quietly spectacular in a way that sneaks up on you. It doesn't shout.

Base Camp for the Back Roads

From here you've got easy access to some genuinely good stuff. Naesby is a quick run and worth stopping for lunch and a go at curling if you haven't tried it. Waipata has a legendary pie co and another cracking pub. St Bathans is the standout though - the Vulcan Hotel alone is worth the detour, and the Blue Lake walk next door is a nice 45 minutes. If you're staying overnight, the Ranfurly Holiday Park is a solid base for doing all of this without rushing.
