There’s a bit to cover here. I’ll start by saying that it’s definitely not the best geo-thermal experience in the area. But it still may be the one for you. I’ll explain….
The geothermal features here aren’t nearly as varied and colourful as those at say Orakai Korako or Wai o Tapu. Plus you’ll pay alot more, as this experience is guided, while the others tend not to be.
Te Puia isn’t for the independent explorer. You may likely be part of a group of 30 plus. It's a pretty touristy too.
BUT there’s a few reasons why you may still choose Te Puia.
No1 is their Pohatu geyser. It’s a real cracker. The largest in the Southern Hemisphere and it’s very active. (Unlike Wai-o-tapu it’s not induced by soap). By far the best in the area.
Also, if you don’t have time or $$ for a more extensive Maori experience, these local Maori guides will give you decent insights. It’s touristy alright and you’ll be quietly allured through craft / souvenir shops too. This put me off, but I noticed others in the group didn’t mind this at all.
So it’s horses for courses.
Like all the other geo-thermal hotspots in the area, use promo code ‘Rankers’ for a 10% discount.
Lastly, I’d go for the 9am, first tour of the day if you can.
Te Puia is located in the Te Whakarewarewa thermal valley. Its crown jewel is the Pohutu Geyser erupting from the ground up to 30 meter’s high – a cracker jacker. Ten to twenty times a day it bursts into life, in its own time.
