South IslandFiordlandDoubtful Sound

Iconic NZ at a sweet price! Providing awesome experiences in Doubtful Sound with small boat day cruises.

Sit back, relax and cruise in comfort onboard the Tasman Explorer in remote and beautiful Doubtful Sound. With a maximum capacity of 45 passengers, we offer the only small boat day cruise in this remote wilderness.

Cross Lake Manapouri by ferry, then coach across the Southern Alps over the Wilmot Pass down into Doubtful Sound, where we spend 3hrs exploring the full length of the fiord out to the Tasman Sea.
The isolation means few people get to experience the unique tranquility found here.

We have free hot drinks on board and offer a free transfer coach from Te Anau or Manapouri.

Well worth getting up early for! The staff were so enthusiastic and full of interesting facts and information. Going on the early trip was made better by the fact we were the only boat on the Sound at the time so it was peaceful.

It was a very nice cruise but we did do a kayak trip the day before and nothing was going to beat that!

Small boat than Real Journeys, well organised, a bit cheaper per person. Everything went without any problems.

It is too expensive but a really great place. Good treat and good advice.

Go Orange! - Doubtful Sound responds:

iHola. Thanks for your review and ranking, and we're very glad you enjoyed your trip :)

I guess Doubtful Sound could be considered expensive, but it roughly an 8 hour day..so if you broke it down, you're paying about $28 per hour for 5 hours of cruising on 2 boat trips, and a return coach trip across a mountain pass plus the attention of 2 staff members for the whole day. Which is not that bad when you consider that we also provide free transfers from Te Anau and unlimited free hot drinks on board as well. The ticket price also pays for Department of Conservation fees for operating in a National Park, fees for using the road across the Wilmot Pass, and marine mammal levies, Meridian Energy passenger levies, amongst other costs that we incur for operating in this beautiful remote wilderness area.

Kind regards

Good price for all day cruise.

Go Orange! - Doubtful Sound responds:

Definitely an avenue for a limited number of discounted fares…mind you our 'normal' rate is pretty damn good anyway!

Day cruise on Doubtful Sound. Picked up at campsite, great boat trips (Manapouri, Lake and Doubtful Sound) and powerstation visit. Well run and good value.

Go Orange! - Doubtful Sound responds:

Thanks Denise - this feedback will be helpful for other travellers this coming summer season. We appreciate the time you took to do it.

We did the full day doubtful sounds tour. What an incredible day with a fantastic bus driver / skippers. Nothing was a problem, they were so helpful and keen to make everyone's day special, even though they do it every day they managed to make it sound fresh, new and exciting... like an orange! I highly recommend these guys. By the way the normal sized lunch option if you buy it, would be fine for most people - the large option was huuuuge!

Go Orange! - Doubtful Sound responds:

Wow, thank you for the ranking and the review Michele and we apologise for the delay in responding!
The lunch options are quite generous, but it's a long day out there in all that fresh air…we can't have you starving before you get back to land :)

Doubtful Sound tour from TeAnau: VERY nice, well organised and very nice staff/guides througout. Pickup at holiday park by bus to Manapouri (30 min), boat across lake Manapouri (1 hr), bus via Homer Pass and power station (very interesting), then 3 hrs boat on Doubtful Sound. A day trip to remember!

Go Orange! - Doubtful Sound responds:

Awesome! Thank you for your feedback :)
