Information

White Pine Bush Picnic Area

White Pine Bush is a great place to visit and experience a piece of New Zealand native forest.

Kahikatea (white pine) is the dominant feature in these 19 ha of bush, while an impressive stand of nikau palms provide their own unique natural beauty. A picturesque stream and small waterfall are both visible from the White Pine Bush track—sometimes small fish, eels and koura (freshwater crayfish) can be seen.

    10/10 for the bushwalk.

    2/10 for the “campsite”.

One of those marks are for that fact that it was gravel.

The other is for the access to the walk.

Unfortunately the site slopes very steadily towards the creek, which isn’t obvious when driving but can see from a distance. Caused havoc to my water pump.

Drop toilet was filthy, clearly had not been cleaned in long time and was unusable.

I parked on a Sunday night after Tutira up the road was closed. Therefore there weren’t trucks disturbing my sleep, they had roadworks as well which slowed everyone down. However come crack of dawn Monday morning and BRRRRR no chance of a sleep in!

The best thing about this freedom camping location is the stunning Kahikatea remnant forest that it borders.

It's also located right next to the road. But this is also a curse as by being on a hill, this is classic truck engine braking territory. This isn't a quiet or private place to spend the night. I wouldn't stay here again and it's only another 10 minutes up the road to Lake Tutira.
