Milford Sound does what it promises. The fiord just sits there being massive and dramatic, and the cruise gives you a comfortable two hours to take it all in. Mitre Peak, waterfalls you can get properly wet under, seals hauled out on rocks, and if you're lucky a pod of dolphins on the way back in. The guides know their stuff and keep the commentary interesting without overdoing it.
The nature cruise tends to be the pick over the scenic cruise. Fewer people on the boat, slightly longer out on the water, and a guide walking the deck pointing things out rather than a general commentary over speakers. A few reviewers noted the morning departure had noticeably smaller crowds, which matters when you're trying to actually enjoy the views.
Don't write off a rainy day here either. The waterfalls double in volume when it's wet and the light gets moody in a good way. Weather rarely ruins a Milford cruise, it just changes it. The covered cabin has big windows so you're sorted either way.

We chose the morning nature tour and are glad we did as it didn't have as many people on it as the scenic cruise.
Cabin had big windows so you have a good view even if the weather turns bad, and there is plenty of deck space for an uninterrupted view. There's a guide walks around the deck pointing out seals, penguins and features of the landscape during the tour. Milford is a must-see in Fiordland and this was a great way to see it.

We chose the scenic tour in the afternoon, only 15-20 people on the boat to share such amazing scenery.
We were lucky to see penguins, seals and dolphins.

Cruise was great even though the top deck constantly smelled of what was being cooked in the kitchen.

From the start of the Milford Road to the end of the Sound, jaw dropping cliffs with waterfalls, penguins, seals and loads of interesting commentary from the boat crew.

Very beautiful cruise during about 2 hours, very spectacular waterfalls, we saw penguins also.
But a bit expensive for this type of activity.

The price was really good. The view was amazing. Driving as close as possible to the waterfall, so that you have good fun and get wet!

Got a nature cruise for almost 3 hrs, a cheaper price together with the Te Anau glowworm caves trip.

Go in the early or late afternoon hours so the price is cheaper.
Staff on boats very friendly and funny, explaining everything along the way.
Went into the rainbows at the waterfalls and close to the rocks to check wildlife.
