Wētā Workshop in Miramar is one of those places that works whether you're a hardcore Tolkien devotee or just someone who's vaguely curious about how films get made. The guides are the real asset here. Most of them actually work in the facility, so the stories they tell are firsthand stuff, not scripted commentary. That comes through clearly across pretty much every review I've read.
The tour covers a wide spread of productions beyond Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which is worth knowing if that's not your thing. Armour, creatures, miniatures, makeup, costumes. The scale of what they produce is genuinely impressive. No photos allowed inside, which sounds annoying but honestly makes you pay more attention. One reviewer called it "an Aladdin's Cave of movie props" and that's about right.
A fair few people mention the price. It's not cheap and the standard tour runs around an hour, so you go in knowing that. If you want more time hands-on, the sculpting or makeup workshops are worth looking at. On weekends, don't bank on seeing much active prop making in progress either.

Brilliant experience, our tour guide was very knowledgeable as he works hands on for the company, telling us great little stories.
Well worth a visit if you like films.

We got to see how they do stuff and prepare for movies. The people there are so talented. Great tour.

I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan so I booked the tour and we were with such incredible people and we saw so many things, yes 10/10!!

As a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings, I had to go there.....
A bit disappointed, as all they do is try to take all your money, very expensive, but still worthy to pay for the guided tour.

Great, loved seeing all of my favourite props and replicas and the free video is a must.
Don't expect to see lots of prop making in action on the weekends if you do the tour.

This is the company who did the weapons, clothes, props to Lord of the Rings.
They have also done props for many other movies as well. Really interesting tour with a lot of information about how to make props and such.

We were on the standard tour and we really enjoyed it.
But we are fans of the Lord of the Rings and many more movies that Weta Workshop helped to do, so I cannot be negative.
