This looped nature walk passes through podocarp and silver beech forest with good specimens of matai, miro, kahikatea and rimu. Another feature is a pitsaw display, illustrating this pioneering timber milling technique.
The start of the track is 18 km south of Haast Pass and 100 m north of the Makarora Visitor Centre.
Follow the anticlockwise loop and keep right at junction with the track to Mount Shrimpton.
This is a remnant mixed beech podocarp forest with some large matai. The denser understorey is festooned with moss.
The remains of the old pitsaw site hark back to days when much of surrounding areas was cleared of timber for use in expanding Otago goldfields.

A well maintained and interesting little walk. The visitor centre cum café will tell you what to look out for, and serve you refreshments on your return.
